Thumbs up Inspired by Bob and Lily Haverstock my flypress

Well a few years ago I stopped by Bob's place and he showed me a few things that inspired me to get a fly press. Wouldn't you know it one went real cheap on that big auction site, it was up in Chicago but it was cheap!

We had to take off the legs to get it in the van, used the bobcat to get it out. Now while at mm2010 Lily was making some neat things with the small fly press, Joel asks me "do we have one of them?" Yes we do! So we have had some dry weather this fall and Joel needed to use the bobcat after he was done in the field get over here and lift this fly press up so we can put the legs back on. As you may or may not have noticed one of the legs has been stripped and painted. I was hoping to get all of it stripped and repainted, well maybe later.

If you were to take the plastic buckets and containers out of this pic it could be from 1890's-1930's.

Thanks to Bob and Lilly for being good friends and providing some inspiration to get this up and going!!!! tt

So... when you hang the jousting target on the arm.. you put the punching glove on the other arm? (Didn't Jackie Chan have to sleep with one of them kung fu stick men? in a movie?) Punch the target, then duck the other arm..

(just kidding) those things can do amazing things... IF... you can build the tooling..

I'm betting.. the metal shaping I was doing with the hydraulic would work just as easy on that rascal.. and be a lot quieter.. except for the grunting..

I got a harley fender progressive die laying in the floor. With the right Spindle offset to one side that could do everything a fender roller could and more..

Hey.. I just put a 3phase motor on my old 1800s drill press.. I see you have it's cousin..

tt,you are making me blush. That looks like a large flypress, What is the size of the upper tool mount? I wouldn't use any thing smaller that a 3/4" steel plate to bridge the tooling hole in the lower frame.

Bob,
There are now 2 1"by3" by 16" long steel plates on the bottom of the press. now the upper die???? well I unbolted something, I'll take some pics, not sure what one should look like?
Tell me if I'm wrong but wouldn't a set of die holders like Ron Naida came up with for the pullmax be a good idea here? don't think they will interchange though
I guess this day doesn't really count but I didn't knock myself out with it ....yet
Every time I look at the handle that hangs down....that is gonna hurt more than any fist or hockey stick would:o tt

tt,

In your vast collection of plunder, would you happen to have a hand wheel from a BIG gate valve? If you did, perhaps you replace the "T" handle and weight. You would have to make the hub match,,, just a thought.

Bob,
big gate valve handle? hmmm Frank Venier would be the man for that, he works at the city sewer plant. are those valves a tapered hex? Actually the handle hanging down is what I look for. while lifting the light end of the handle I reach the limit of strength in my good arm, which was kinda scary cause the wife had the heavy end....:-o

Roll it with a tubing roller.

My tools have hand wheels made from two 180 degree bends cut and welded together into a hoop.. THE size of the ring should be much larger for your IMPACT press.. I thought inertia played a big role in impact pressure.

Here are a couple of pics of the die holder? I unbolted it from the ram, hard to believe that little bitty hex die is what the big old fly press was being used for.

Dawia,

It needs to be about 26"dia. and about 70 to 90 pounds. (SWAG)

TT,
For forging or heavys dies make a new upper flange that will accept 3/4" dia. shouldered tool stems.

I have this pic of Lilly's fly press from Oblong.

100_5710.jpg

Is the weight and diameter of the wheel proportional to the machine or the work being done??

Just an idea, but I see round tractor wheel weights all over in the scrap yards. It would be heavy enough if you could make the hub to attach it.

That weight on the arm you have looks very scary to me. I can see it hitting someone watching you work
