Over the years I've used many different methods to strip my parts, prior to repairing them, what are you using aside from having them bead blasted? I've used aircraft stripper and the cleaning wheels that Eastwood sells.
Then after repairs are made, what metal preps are you using. Then what are you recoating them with, before painting? I've used different primers and sealers, many of which are older products. Sometimes we get locked into a method that works, but there might be something better out there.

All my rust repair parts on my GTO so far have been sand blasted. Then washed with Southern Polyurethane waterborne wax and grease remover.
Then sprayed with SPI black epoxy primer. I know when all the repairs are made I will have to scuff the epoxy and re-coat with fresh epoxy followed by the SPI 2K primer. Paul

I normally have Redi-Strip take care of the stripping. I follow that up with 80 grit on the DA to give the metal a bit of 'tooth'. For primer...nothing but the best. Southern Polyurethanes, Inc. epoxy.

I don't that we have had a Redi-Strip in Seattle for over twenty years. We have to do that stuff in the dark of night so no one can see us.

Sandblast the jambs and edges. 9" sanding discs to cut the paint off of fragile, flat surfaces. (Suck sand out of ever orifice and crevice for weeks

I use ACP in Milstadt, Il. got stuff there now, have been using Ditzler dp 90 or 40, then Dupont due to the local suppliers, but they have been bought out, so gonna go with SPI real soon. The fun part has been finding the surface prep disc for a 4" angle grinder, just ordered some for the 6" DA. tt

Hi.
For the stripping / cleaning we use J blast, glass beads, recycled plastic beads with varying degrees of mix, the soft mix works great with alloys, heavy abrasive mix for metal restoration and body shell preparation builds. we clean everything from delicate engine parts using soft media to complete vehicle shells , running gear etc when it comes to coating its got to be acid etch 2 part primer to start the process works on both ferrous and non ferrous materials with super adhesion rates . then epoxy / 2k primer, these may not be green but they work and last for years. some of the green water based primers don't work as is evident on some newly manufactured vehicles , here in the UK many suffer from built in rust and poor paint adhesion. for finished coating can be spray painted using , water based, 2 k, polyurethane or powder coated depending on build and application. |

we have a place called "strip clean" in so-cal, they do chemical striping, i'm not sure if that is the same as ready strip or not. the chemical striping leaves a thin coat that's like an acid etch and as long as you dont get it wet and you don't grind it, it will never rust. and when it comes time to paint 80g da will clean it right up, never had a problem around seams either.
