I have a cousin who works for a railroad (to be unnamed). YEARS back, I mentioned to his Dad (my uncle) that I wouldn't mind having a piece of track for an anvil. When I went up to the family reunion, my cousin had 2 pieces of 180lb track 3' long sitting beside the driveway. He'd just called the yard and had them bandsawed from brand new track. It took 4 of us to load it in my truck and when I pushed it out by my shop it's been sitting where it lay for all these years. Now that I have a bandsaw that will cut it, I probably ought to saw it up into 12" lengths and sell it at MetalMeet.

And your taps will run away & hide.

With a little work they will polish up and work great. You can also clean up the web of the track and use it for shaping also.

Joe, no doubt you just tossed those into a benchtop tumbler to clean them up, right?

Peter, I have a super finisher, which is a belt sander with a very long narrow belt. Used several differant grits to get the finish. On the side I used a 4-1/2" grinder with different grit discs and then to the super finisher.

Do any of you use a smaller track for anything?? I'm not sure what size you would consider it, but is a little smaller than what I would consider typical. I'll dig it out and look. I think I have about 50 feet.
