Default Blacksmithing

I'd also be interested in learning about blacksmithing. What kind of equipment would you need to bring to put on a demonstration?

Sounds like a great idea to me! Blacksmithing fits right in - it's a method of making even more TOOLS!!!!!

One of the treats when you do Blacksmithing is the "Blowin' of da Anvil". Has anybody ever 'done it' or seen it done? It's a hoot!! :-o

With a good mix of TNT --and 10-uh-C's finest XXX we just might be able to clear the pond ...err the lake I guess they call it, and land it in those front yards on the other side of the lake. If we miss it, might land down there with the steam engines on the lower side of the "pond".

Something to heat metal, something to hit it on and something to hit it with. For demonstrations away from my forge I take an anvil and stand, a gas forge and stand, a leg vice, a selection of tongs and hammers, a bucket full of water, various small tools e.g. punches, chalk, various rodded blacksmith tools.

I hope to be demonstrating hammer making at the UK based metalmeet next April.

Bob,
That would be a great demo.
Making and altering tools is such a great thing to know.

and good tools are so much fun.

I love the story of how the Brit, Naismith (sp), sold the admiralty on buying his newly designed steam hammer.

He managed to get all the big wigs in a room with the hammer and a forge.
He then started talking about power and control,
brought out a piece of stemware, set an egg in it; and then brought the hammer down and cracked the egg without touching the glass.
Then without missing a beat, he pulled the glass away replacing it with a white hot steel bar and proceeded to flatten it in one blow. Spraying the front row with an impressive array of sparks in the process. (nothing like fireworks to get the old adrenaline going)

Well,
I bought a lottery ticket, but I'm not holding my breath.

Besides, I don't look anything like my passport photo any more. They'd never let me out of the country (or maybe not back in )

Lightbulb forge/ furnance

When I put together the casting/ moldmaking demo, I was in Robinson, and ran into the hardware store, made a mental note of what was there, so at MM6 I will build a small furnance to melt Aluminum, and cast with it. The furnance will also act as a forge, should anyone want to do that. Yes I will show anyone interested, how to build a forge/ furnance, if they want. Not much difference between them, other then one lay's on it's side.
