Default Engine build in sizes

Several pages ago we were talking about a BMW M5, 3.8 ltr. engine (puts out 340 hp standard).

I have a friend who has a shop. He’s specialized in rebuilding and performance tuning BMWs. In about 2 weeks, he’s going to put a brand new engine into a M5 and he has allowed me to drop into his shop to take some pics of the engine and take/make some measurements (height, length, width) so we can see how it will fit into the Bug body. I’m not saying that this is THE engine, but Toolmanmike wanted some “engine sizesâ€â€¦. Those will be provided within 2 weeks!

Hi Curt,

I think you'll find the answer to your question in this thread:

http://www.metalmeet.com/forum/showt...n+lack+support

that started THIS thread
When this thread started the activity and commitment level was HUGE. Then we got into 3D CAD design and the it seemed to slow down ALOT. Practically nothing happened for the past few months.
Somewhere in one of the threads I seem to recall that maybe a front fender or so should be built at MM05.... don't know it that's going to happen. To my knowledge Toolmanmike is the only person doing the 3D cad?

Hope we'll go on soon!!!!

Default the ticking clock...

....there's a saying in this country..."too many cooks in the kitchen"...and i've already stated my concerns about cad...i've always been faster with a pencil and paper...and it sounds like some very important things have yet to be worked-out...leaving little time for R&D...with a year deadline, time management becomes very important...building a whole car is not as easy as it might appear...many facets that become known only as things progress...and coupes even more so...

my two cents...

Yeah, we have that saying too, but..... THAT IS THE EXERCISE... a lot of persons weighing in their ideas. Forget about the deadline. I think it has been canceled?

You're right. Building a whole car is not easy. If it was, it wouldn't have been necessary for Ford to spend $1,500,000,000 for designing the Sierra in 1980!!!

Now the stupid Dane has to ask another question... AGAIN:
What is R&D abb. for? Research and Design??

Maybe I can clear up some of your questions.....

Nothing exists at this point other than a partially completed body design in SolidWorks modeling software. I believe Wray's intention was to use SolidWorks' capabilities that make it ideal for group design projects.

Because only a small handful of individuals here have or will ever have SolidWorks it's not likely much group participation can occur. Some of us have other solid modeling and surfacing programs. If we all had the same modeling software the associativity of the design's features could be used to advantage. For instance, I could design part of the chassis, if that was associated in the total assembly with a fender part it'd be easy to check fit, interferences, etc, etc.

Associativity of features can't currently be exported from one solid modeler to another so we lose a major design tool by not all having the same software.

It's been mentioned anyone can get a student copy of SolidWorks for around $200, as opposed to the commercial pricing around $4,000. Yes, anyone can get a $200 copy by claiming to be a student. The problem is we have a very active organization in this country called the BSA (Business Software
Alliance) who considers buying student versions of software by non-students to be piracy. These people don't fool around with software pirates. Jesse James had to cough up $35,000 when someone noticed he was using a pirated copy of MasterCam software on his TV show.

The Bugatti group design project was a good idea, except it's hard to have a group project with only a couple players.

Now maybe if Metalmeet could meet the requirements of being a school we could all be students......

Doug

How about a not-for-profit organization aimed at furthering the craft of metalshaping by education of it's members, development of skills, and the exchange of ideas?

Call `em and see if that will fly.........john
