Mathias, a good place to check out for these and more answers would be Chopper Underground. There are a bunch of great people over there who will steer you in the right direction...(ha ha ha... I know, it was terrible, but I couldn't resist...)

Default Another good site

Mathius
Name is Mike from Long Island NY. Am new to this site and your request about building a bike caught my eye. I work with my son at his shop and we are presently in process of building a frame jig using 2x3 steel tubing as foundation.
First of all I’ve got to say that all the advice you are getting is right on. Second I would suggest you check out Choppers Builders Handbook http://64.172.168.34/neatstuff/index.html
Covers everything you need to know about frames, jigs, registration and much more, and best of all it’s a freebie, can’t believe I said that
He are a couple of shots of shots of bike we did, owner supplied frame and running gear, all metalwork and paint was done in the shop.

I'm in the process of building an adjustable frame JIG now for my first real bike project. Envy was kind enough to include my warm up build in his pic of mini choppers (mine if the mini Fireman Bike).

A jig does not have to be elaborate, I have been doing a ton of research on this getting ideas for mine.... there is a lot to consider but it will be worth the effort.

As far as just jumping in on a "real" bike for starters - unless you have a close friend in the Custom Bike building business to lead you in the right direction and aid with construction questions you really should build a Mini to get a feel for things. I for one had never messed with bike construction (only destruction! LOL), the time it took me to build the mini fireman bike opened my eyes to what it actually takes to build a bigger version. It is a great way understand the math and construction that goes into the build because all the same variables are in play, just in a smaller scale!

I did not use a jig to build the mini, but she does run straight at 50+ MPH and it does feel like your doing 100 mph on that thing! BUt I also spent 9 months constructing her.

Good luck and do tons of research before you start!
