I've taken photo's of the build, but I still haven't got the compression software so I can post them. Maybe I'll loosen my grip on a few greenbacks tonight and buy the software!
You can down load Adobe's Photoshop Album Starter Edition for free from:

Boogiemanz1,

Snapper rear tires are 14"OD. Cub is 20"OD and my CK tires are 22"OD. The larger tires will increase top speed some, but it will probably be a dog out of the hole.

Jeffrey,

How did your test drive turn out? Still anxiously awaiting a photo of your set up.

Thanks guys,

Hi Jeff
Crashed first hard corner!
I had bought some grade 5 bolts to hold the rim to the hub, but some how the drive wheel got some cheap Chinese bolts. They let go after 3 lap's around the track. The rim is now toasted. I do have another, and put the tire on it last night. Tonight I will take the car apart, and start painting it. Should be back together this weekend.
I got the compression software, so now i'm going to play with it and try to post some pictures.
Some of the things that I did learn before the crash.
1. 3 inch tires would be better then the 2.25" tires I have on the rear. 2.25" tires have little traction!
2. Need a better throttle cable
3. Wear a helmet!!
4. bigger windshield, to keep the bugs out of my teeth!!
5. This things are more fun then you can imagine!!

Build one

Jeffrey,

Is this your type of MTD rear axle? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...69138&rd=1

Is it a multiple gear unit? If yes, how do you select gears on your cart? Clutch?

Thanks,

Hi Jeff
Yes that looks just like mine. Mine is a single speed unit. I have a MTD mower for my yard, and it has 6 speeds, and after looking at it, it looks like a sequential shift, ie; just move the lever forward to shift gears. It would be easy to put in, but the weight would be an issue. I might look at it more tonight. I do have an extra mower for parts.
After seeing the one on EBAY, maybe I should part out my mower!!
I got my axle at the swap meet for $15 with the tires. When I looked on EBAY, that one was at $53, and $9.99 for the tires.
Look at the picture and you can see the mounting holes out at the ends of the aluminum casting. They make mounting it a breeze.
What you can't see in the picture, is the disc brake that is on the other side.

I searched MTD parts online and found that is a single speed unit. $353 new!!!

How do you engage it on your CK?
Do you have a clutch?
What size pullies are you running on top of the drive unit and on the motor?

Do you know what type of mower this unit came on (ie: rear engine rider, front engine tractor)?

Thanks,

I use an over center idler with a rod going forward to meet the handbrake shaft, so to start out you pull the handbrake and it forces idler against the belt, a hand clutch sort of. I patterned it after the one on my rototiller.
I think my pullys are 4" and 6", just what I had laying around.
The axle is off a front engine tractor
