Price breaks sometimes kick in after a certain poundage with large suppliers who really don't want to deal with small accounts. If you are a real small acount, you pay a premium price.

What I learned buying steel for my high school shop from large suppliers was that once you hit certain poundage benchmarks, it lowered the prices per pound considerably.

Often I "overbought" just enough to bring my price per pound WAY down. In other words, ordering 30-40% more might only cost 5-10% more, because of the price break after XX pounds.

A good salesperson will walk you through this. Vendors who deal primarily in small poundages will not often have these pricing structures.
