Default Blade Sharpening

At work we have an older Pexto stomp shear (approx a 32" machine) that is in dire need of having the blades sharpened. Is there anyone that does this, knows where to get it done, or knows how to do this? This is in the San Diego area if that makes a difference.

Default manual

Not sure if this is your model, but here's one manual:

http://aoi.ou.edu/images/Pexto%20137%20Foot%20Shear.pdf

It covers blade adjustment, and gives you the sharpening angles. Any good professional blade sharpening shop should be able to accomodate this, once you remove the blades. Takes time to reinstall and set up blades correctly, but the directions are good. If you can shear paper, you are right on.

I use Thomas Regional (now ThomasNet) extensively to locate services/materials:

The printing industry does a lot of resharpening, if you know a print shop they may know a place. also most blades have 4 edges so they can be rotated till all 4 edges are dull.

For professional blade sharpening recommendations I would check with:

a local machinery dealer,
a local fab shop,
a woodworking shop,
a printing shop.

There are a number of ways to sharpen the blades. The best way is on a dedicated blade grinding machine. That would be the same type machine printing shops use for their paper knives which have to be razor sharp.

And, be sure to give the grinder the angle spec from the link in the previous postings.

Default mail order sharpening

I just stumbled on this tonight, helping a friend get blades for a Pexto stomper we got out of a school yesterday, along with several other old pieces. Blades were really abused, as was the rest of the batch, but parts are available for the old machines.

If you haven't found a local sharpener yet, they claim to sell new as well as sharpen, don't know yet about their prices for new compared to the factory blades from Roper Whitney, who now owns Pexto.

I have 52 inch (70s vintage) pexto shear. I have the blades good enough to cut paper. With the pedal depressed i can run a 002 feeler guage the length of the blades. When I release the pedal I have to pick it up the last couple of inches with my toes. Does anybody know how to adjust the upper balde carrier. I am wondering if it just old and gummed up. Oiling it didnt help
