Default Mittler Brothers English Wheel

I did a search for threads on anything to do with the Mittle Brothers English Wheel but couldnt find much.

Things I like are the 1/4" wall tubing, ability to adjust the lower anvil so its parralel to the top wheel, and quality of the anvils

Has any one bought the build it your self kit. What are your opinions?

Ron Covell uses one in his instructional videos, he must approve of it

MB bought out Metalcrafter's tools from Cal Davis about a year ago. M/C English Wheels were designed by John Glover.

I am more than capable of building my own frame but I am seeming to have issues finding a e-wheel kit. I checked our threads but seems the suppliers mentioned are out of business or retiring.

How much does any an e-wheel kit typically cost?? Are their any objections to the MB e-wheel. How it seems like no one here has experience with one??

Hi 32,

I think I used one at a meet once. I didn't pay a lot of attention to who built it. It was what was available to use and it worked fine.

There isn't any real magic here. You are moving metal between two rollers under pressure. The metal stretches. It does take a different technique when using full radius lower anvils as compared to anvils with flats. A really weak frame causes problems, but most aren't that weak. Out of round anvils will cause more problems than a soft (not floppy) frame.

As far as price goes, price the steel pieces with one of the online steel suppliers - that should put you in the ballpark. I would say that if the kit is priced in your price range, go for it. If you can swing for one already welded and aligned I think you would be better off - after all, you don't want to cut the pieces yourself which makes me wonder if you would be able to get everything aligned after welding. (I don't know your capabilitys)

32Chevy ( Insert name here ) here is a link to Joe Anders and the anvils and such he makes, if you build one you can't do any better than the stuff Joe makes.

Thumbs up

I personally confirm that Joe Andrews is a real stand up guy as well and that he makes nice stuf!!

He makes all the parts you need for building an ewheel, except the frame... but that's the easy part

Joe´s anvils is really nice!
If you go for the "flat" ones it´s really really important to build the frame extremly stiff if the frame is just a little little to weak the anvils will screw up your work in a second...and you will end up with really bad grooves/lines in the panel...

The reason why it´happen is if the dimension of the frame is not more than enough it will "open up" some and the result is that the contact area is just the edge of the "flat" part of the anvil....

I have try several of homebuilt wheels with this really nice anvils that perform really bad, and the problem is ofcourse not the nice anvils, it´s to weak frames!

The result I seen over the years is amazingly nice panels done with flimsy frames and full radius anvils, last time was in Cass Nawrokis shop..and no one can say that he create bad panels...
it´s more up to what you feel nice and learn to use I guess..

Just my opinion and experience
