Talking 100 lb propane tank forge

Greetings guys!
I'm a newbie here after lurking abit and am trying to build a forge from a 100 lb propane tank .

Have 2 NC whisper's right now but even end to end, they just are not long enough to heat the metal I use for building metal scroll panels for stairs.

I have heard of building burners using either .045 mig tips or cutting torch nozzles usd for propane torch set ups.

Also would like info on lining....I have heard of a spray foam type?????

Here's a pic of my current forge.......

BTW.......HIYA SNOTZALOT:mrgreen: ....{it's the "ELC" guy}:o

Hello (people here appreciate names over handles) geonc,

This is likely not the ideal website to get answers to forging questions, as this site is devoted to sheet metal shapers, very few of whom do hot work. There would be no shortage of input from the 'guru's den' over at anilfire.

I have never heard of a foam insulation for a forge. I believe your only options are kao-wool ( a ceramic fiber insulation blanket) usually sprayed with ITC hardener to make it more heat reflective and more rigid, castable refractory cement, or a combination of the two. Each has their merits. A forge lined in kaowool heats up very quickly, but is fragile and is easily consumed by welding flux. Castable is very durable, but takes time to bring up to heat.

If you want to build gas burners, one of the most popular websites for forge and burner design was put together by Ron Reil: http://ronreil.abana.org/design1.shtml

I hope that gives you a start.

-cheers, Adair Orr

Hello (people here appreciate names over handles) geonc,
Sorry about that:mrgreen: this BB is identical in structure/color etc..... to another that I just about live on.

Regarding my thread, I just figured that with all the talent here I could possibly get some answers....and I did!

Apparently searching for forges is not as easy as searching for .......

I'll give Ron's page a look.

cheeers and thanks

George,

DON'T USE spray foam insulation in a forge. The fumes from burning urethane foam are extremely toxic. What you need is high temperature Ceramic Fiber Insulation. The inner working layer should be rated for 2700F. This can be backed up a couple inches of the cheaper 2400F fiber. Then coat the interior with ITC-100 after you have fired the forge a few times.

I can supply you with everything you need to build your LP Gas forge. If you email me off list I will send you my catalog of Forge Building Supplies and Forge kits.
