I came across this on Youtube (http://youtu.be/MRIGks3gxG0). I don't know anything about MIG welding but this is amazing. The metal from the rod doesn't form a nice neat ball and drop gently into the puddle as I might have imagined. You can see the spatter balls flying off in all directions. Enjoy.

Very interesting video, thanks Bill. It appears that the lighter colored molten mass that forms on the end of the wire is the inner flux core. That also seems to be where most the spatter is coming from. Flux core mig welding does have a lot more splatter than gas welding. This video really shows why that is.

I thought I could see the flux gassing off and spitting out of the center of the molten ball. I'm not sure if the flux does that (gas off) but that's what it looked like to my unknowing eyes.

I would really like to see a similar video about what happens with solid wire and shielding gas. Would give us a better idea about splatter. I've never ran flux core in my MIG but man it does splatter if I forget to turn the gas on.

For a better explanation than I can provide and more info go to:

and scroll down to MIG Welding Transfer Types

Not all MIG welding processes will look like the one in your video. It all depends on machine parameters (voltage and amperage, primarily), not all machines will be able to do all transfer types.
