Welding Question

Although it is not sheet metal and the moderators can correct me and say its not a metalmeet question I will post this in this forum.

I have a friend who collects military like paraphernalia and he brought me a knife and was wondering if the "spring" on the back of it could be re-welded. Material seems to be a stainless steel like metal that is riveted to the frame but part of it has broken.

The question is one can you weld spring steel?

I think the heat may take the spring out of it.

It may be possible to retemper it, but I've never tried. Some Googling might shed some light on how feasible it is.
