This weekend we had a great little get together at my shop in central West Virginia to make some planishing hammer parts. Kerry Pinkerton, Bennet Chapman, Dutch Comstock, and Rob Murray all traveled through some of the worst weather we have had this winter to get snowed in at my shop for the weekend. Kerry drove up from Alabama to deliver a couple new English Wheels he had built for Dutch and me. Bennett Chapmen came with Kerry. Rob Murray came up from Tennessee and Dutch ventured in from the frozen north of upstate New York

After driving through a blizzard in Kentucky it was pouring down rain when Kerry and Bennett arrived late Thursday afternoon. The three of us were drenched and half frozen by the time we got Kerry's truck and trailer unloaded. Kerry had brought the new English Wheels he had built for Dutch and me, as well as his new bench wheel. Kerry did a fantastic job of building these wheels. Once I tried his wheel at Metalmeet I had to have one. It not only has a great feel, but looks good too.

Just as we finished setting up all the wheels, Rob arrived and the unloading continued. After a dinner break we went back to the shop to plan out the weekend. About eleven Dutch rolled in and we got our second wind. But by 2 am we decided to call it a night. Friday the freezing rain continued, but it didn't dampen the spirit. We worked / played from 9 am till after 2 am again. This schedule continued all weekend except Saturday the rain turned to snow and the 4 WD and snow plow got a workout. Inside the shop sparks and chips were flying everywhere. Bennett worked his magic at the milling machine, machining housings, while Kerry was at the lathe turning out tool holders. Rob worked on cutting and welding linkages and Dutch and I cut out the parts for the arms. By Sunday night we had most the parts for five planishing hammers ready to head to their new homes.

It was a fun weekend and we all learned a bunch of neat little tricks from working with each other. It was hard to say good by but by 1 am Monday morning we were all pretty beat. Luckily the snow had stopped and the roads were clear for the rides home. A good time was had by all.

Hi Jay,

Wow, you guys are the ultimate diehards. Snow and freezing rain didn't even slow you down. :D Great report, hope to read more and see some pictures. Looks like we'll have a few more noisy planishing hammers soon. We need about ten of them at MetalMeet04 this year, we can put them out in the cornfield, that should keep the crows away

Thanks,

Wray

Snow, freezing rain, lack of sleep...nothing slowed us down. This really started at MM03 where Jay and I discussed me building him an ewheel. I told him that since I wanted to build a planishing hammer anyway, I'd deliver the wheel when I came up.

Bennett wanted one also so he was in the mix. Dutchs ewheel was finished also so he decided to come down and play and pick his up also but he has also decided to build a tube backbone planishing hammer to replace the one he brought to MM. Rob Murray also was in the hunt and joined the party at the last minute.

Bennett came over Wednesday and we loaded the truck for a 4am departure. Sometime during the night I got up to go pee and could not go back to sleep. Bennett heard me moving around and looked over at the alarm clock in the guest bedroom and noticed it was nearly 4 so he go up and started getting ready. When I heard him moving around I went down to check and found him nearly ready so we headed north. It was TWO am! The guest bedroom clock hadn't been set in ages....

Turns out it was probably a good thing. Weather north of Nashville was pretty nasty. About 4:30 we noticed cars slipping around and when we pulled over to render aid to one that went in the ditch, we realized that the road and shoulder was slushy. We drove on a while and found out from a gas station that the weather was supposed to warm up about 6 and the rain melt the snow. About 6 we headed back out and drove about 30mph for 3 hours or so until we cleared the snow up near Lexington Ky. I'm sure I've driven 600 miles in the rain before but can't remember when! The trip took us 14 hours.

On top of that, we worked till 2 am, started at 9 and worked till midnight or 2 every night.

I learned a bunch! Watching Bennett machine the castings was an education in itself and we were able to do 5 castings (Jay needed one also) complete except for final honing. Bennett said originally he thought it was 8 hours of machining apiece and he was pretty dead on.

We also go 5 sets of lower tool holders done except for a little touchup. Since Rob doesn't have a mill, we made sure he got a complete set.

There has been a lot of discussion and thought around linkage for these machines and sometime around midnight Thursday, they (I was about dead on my feet) came up with what I believe will be the ultimate approach. It uses a cable operated foot control similar to what Dutch had at MM03. The cable goes into the stand where it is connected to a size 41 chain. A sprocket mounted at the top and bottom of the tube backbone feeds the chain THROUGH the upper arm to an "L" shaped bellcrank which operates the air motor. It should be a slick setup, clean and effective. Rob fabricated the sproket holders and we got chain and sprokets from Tractor Supply next door to the motel..

We got the arms all cut out and labeled and although we did not get a complete frame built, everyone has all the necessary parts and know-how. I was too occupied to even get my camera out of the truck but both Jay and Dutch took photos.

Oh, sometime during all this, I assembled and tested my forge components from the forge kit purchased from Jay at MM. Now I have no exchuses.

When I start my assembly, I'll post photos. Many thanks to Jay for his hospitality.

Kerry
I'm almost done with the foot pedal drawings modeled after the one Dutch built for his hammer. I'm going to be cutting out the parts this weekend and if everything fits I'll post them next week. It's a very clean design and should be very easy to build. Dutch did a nice job.
Sounds like you guys had a busy weekend. I hope you had time to take some pics.
