Hi everyone new member here and a lurker for a year or two i finally got motivated enough to make a post .Sorry if this is in the wrong section .

I picked up this Old cast Iron press a few years back with the intention of making a English wheel out of it , but after talking with a few mates they reckon i would be better off making a English wheel from scratch.

So what can i build with this i was thinking of a louver punch machine ?
Anyone got some better ideas ?

The Throat measures 25" deep / 63.5 cm and the height of the opening at the front is 10" /27.5 cm

Hi James,

could be turned into a heavy bead roller....

When I first saw it, I thought of a bead roller. The opening is too wide for a normal bead roller, but what if you used a big urethane wheel along with a normal bead wheel? Or a bead wheel and a skate wheel?
Then it could work something like this;

Punch and louver press are the obvious first responses.

Maybe some kind of nibbler or shear with circular cutting blades?

Give me a while, maybe I will come up with something a little "out There":)

Hello James

Does it have a eccentric shaft in the top arm? or is it a solid frame? I see cogs on the back side does it have a shaft that turns?

if there is an eccentric shaft, and depending on the stroke- I would say make it into a reciprocating hammer, if that's too tall an order then a bead roller ( but if you are going to build an english wheel from scratch-- you can build a bead roller into it ( english wheel / bead roller)

My two cents--

With the shaft and eccentric through the top of the frame it cries out to be made into a power hammer/Pullmax type of machine.

I adapted a similar frame (although not as good) to the metalcraft power hammer kit. It would work great.

Thanks for the Ideas so far guys , i will take some more photos and measurements today and theres a few bits and pieces that came with it that arent in the photos .

Looks like a nice frame. I can see the top shaft already has an eccentric end on it. To make a reciprocating hammer all you would need to do is make a tool holder for the upper and lower.

If you mount a sealed type bearing on the end of that upper shaft to fit into a horizontal slot in the upper tool holder you make it would cause the block to move up and down. The horizontal slot will need to be as wide as the bearings outside diameter and as long side to side as the bearing OD plus the eccentric diameter. It looks like the eccentric is way off to the side of the shaft so the machine will have more travel than it really needs if you make it into a Pullmax type. You might just need to make a new upper shaft with less offset. We need Rod Doc to draw up some ideas.

For a Pullmax type machine you only need 2.5mm to 5mm (.100” to .200”) travel. The more travel it has the more power it will take to run it and the more vibration there will be as well. Nice find for sure!

Well heres some more photos of the other bits and pieces that came with the Press .

The Front Tool Block is 8 3/4 inches by 6 1/8 inch and the main drive shaft is 2" Diameter and the offset shaft is 1 1/8 " inches diameter the brass insert block is 2 1/4 inches by 2 1/4 inches . There are no support bearings on the main shaft so originally i am assuming that the shaft is not design to spin fast there are small grease ports to grease the main shaft .

I am leaning towards the Power hammer / pullmax type machine and use a VFD on the motor so i can maybe use a louver die on it as well ??

The 'brass insert block' makes it a "Scotch-yoke" there was a whole thread on using that to drive a power hammer. Don't know if it survived though.

What amount does the block move up/down when the shaft is revolved?

This is a great start toward a power hammer!

The truck cap looks like a 39 or 40 mack EGU.

It looks like it is missing most of a tooth on the big gear.

"It looks like it is missing most of a tooth on the big gear."

That won't matter unless you want to make a punch press out of it. The present gearing is way too slow for a reciprocating machine. Best to strip out the present works and use ball bearings and a shaft with an eccentric at the forward end.

On the other hand, at a slow speed it might have some possibilities as a shrinker...........

it looks like a shear for cutting leather sheets, which would have been fed in a pile up to 3 inches think.
it also fits the description of this machine...:D:D
