I have heard of doming dies for a long time. I bought a Pullmax P-5/2 last March and have just been working with it as time allows. It came with quite a bit of tooling, including what appeared to be a top half of a doming die. I finally got time to make a lower half

Sorry about the dark pictures, but the lower die is shaped kind of like a donut, and I could not believe how well it works!

http://www.metalmeet.com/photopost/data/4051/Dcp_0130.jpg

I picked up some scrap 18 ga and in less than a minute raised the two 3-4 inch areas a half to three quarters of an inch. I grabbed some 14 ga and did an area about 5 in across and 1/2 in high in about the same amount of time.
I have some dies made in UHMW for my new hammer. I hope they work as well........john

John,

What also works nice is a bottom die that has urethane in it. You could still use your top die, as it is.

Do you have thumbnail dies yet?

Hey John!

Welcome to the "POG" pullmax owner's group!
Now my thoughts on plastic dies, well they work, they absorb abit of the power compared to the steel of steel, they do make if quieter. Now add the rubber coated upper, you just about slow it down to nothing, it gets real quiet.

The best way to demo/practice doming is make a dreaded bowl, so as you work the metal from the center to the edge you can see the tuck appear and disappear as you go, your stretching and shrinking and you did not change dies or brands of beer.

I made my own, after ff01 seeing George King's factory tooling, uh it only tool a few years to make that stayle lower die, and it works better with different upper radiused dies. Best way if practice on scrap, if you have a certain radii your making(cycle fender) they same radius on the upper makes fast work of it!

Take care!

Hi Larry, Hi Terry, yes, I have some Clay Cook shrinking dies I got with my P-3. I built an adapter to use them with the larger tooling. Gator now has the P-3, and I am trying to explore the tooling that came with this machine.

I made a lower die in UHMW, but it is about 5" across. I have several radius male dies for it but have not used it yet.

You can't see it in these poor pictures, but the top die has a flat then a bevel, I think I am going to put a better radius on it, as it marks the panel some now.

As soon as time allows, I need to make some "Ron Nadia" tool holders....and a setting fixture....john

a radiused top works better for me, the lower die is concave, has a number of different radii, you try to match the radii with the part, where have we heard that before. Oh you spent real money on dies??? just fine tuned the Nibbler baby dies at the EMMR, they were good in the jig, but there is the set screws that hold them?, well that pushes them a little of line. Pullmax collet a much better way of holding tooling. If you check the other place, you can see some of the dies and adapter i made planishing hammer dies now fit the p7 and baby, even made the Milwaukee lower floating die holder, i do like that as a planishing set up, allot quieter than the air planishing hammer.
Good to see your still kickin' the motor over!

Kerry,
i just may show up, in fact last nite in an email i mentioned that is was funny how Gator is running mm,700 miles or so away, i just ran emmr 800 miles away.
It would be nice if we could all play nice! The metal sales looks very interesting! Hockey is all messed up here, so i may have plenty of time to go.

Also mm being a non-profit educational organization, students should be able to get special school waivers for attending instructional events. I just found out about this, if anyone is interested i can get more info.

may bring that boy of mine, speaking boys how is yours doing? Does he travel with you all over?

So who's not playing nice Terry? There hasn't been any trouble since Varnell lobbed his last mortar shell last year.

Terry,

While you most likely have no clue who I am, I am very excited to see you posting on MetalMeet! I would also be quite excited to meet you if you happen to make it to MM06! Very glad the "two groups" seem to be getting along now :D

Oh, thanks for the input too!

John,
How 'bout turning on a light or 2? I can't copy what I can't see :D  :D Are you haveing fun with that machine yet?

Hey, by the way, remember how my shrinking dies were pretty near crap at Roger's place? I figured out why, just last night :) . Was looking through my toolbox that I keep my dies and stuff in.................. Guess what I found? The upper thumbnail die that I had at MM05 :o We were trying to shrink with my "new" die, which hadn't been tuned yet!

Found it while digging up my Naida holder for some 1" aluminum dies I'm working on. Need some 3/4" and/or 1" aluminum for dies for that Pulmax, John? I might have a scrap or 2 I can bring along for you to check out.

I'm still stuck in chassis land on that Model A, for the most part :?

Tim,

Use a photo editor to lighten them. I like the Microsoft Photo Editor - SIMPLE to adjust colors. It comes with Office.

Tim,
thanks for the kind words! i have noticed you signature and will look for you when i make it there.

Gator,
looking forward to meeting you, i will let you know on the metal order. Lets learn from the past so we don't make the same mistakes.

Anyone know if Jon Clifton will be there? i enjoyed sitting there and listening to him talk about racing when cars were made of metal! also check and see if he has that Austin 7 "chummy" roadster finished! <grin>

Hi Terry. I believe Brent-from-tin-uh-sea brought his son last year. He had to write a paper for the pricipal for the time to be counted....seems as though it made him a celebrity at school.....

Tim, Terry is OK, but don't try to eat breakfast in a room with him and Stan...

Oh and I'm all about tool scraps  This Pullmax will shear boxing plates and do all kinds of tricks for project builds.

Terry, I got the C Cook dies from Keith with the little pullmax. I really like them. I have some more to play with but still need some finishing. Oh and I ain't kicking much anymore ......probably won't until the Chief gets on the front burner. I'd still like to stop by and see your "collection".............john

John,

Your welcome to stop by, it will take you a 1/2 day to get thru here, 1 person did it in 2 hrs, but it was 102 outside and inside. If your eating or drinking your fair game, my whole goal in life is to see fluids/food coming out of place they should not be(grin) If you Stan's a dandy, you got to meet his brother! He's got the hair, good looks and the brains of the family! <<<very big grin >>>

Tim,
the do-rag? reminds me of the Monty Phyton characters that have had their brains removed. Sure we could have some fun there, what are you planning to do there? are you bringing a project? Just got thew/s back to the usual mess it normally is, allot of work to move stuff in and out.

Guess i should do more reading than typing, find out whats going on.

Terry, I've been accused of having my brain removed a time or 2  The do rag just covers up the big bare spot on the back of my head. That's the spot that always catches the the sparks when I weld, so I try to keep it covered.

MetalMeet, for me, is time to hang out with my friends and learn stuff..........but I'm thinking I might actually bring a project this year. I'll be dragging my Model A to Oblong - or at least parts of it.

John, it's tough enough trying to eat at the same table as Stan

Hi Anders, that looks like a mid-late 30's chief or sport scout. Mine is a `47 Chief

http://www.metalmeet.com/photopost/data/3632/medium/28Dcp_0099.jpg

I partially restored it twenty years ago for a friend, when he died his son brought it to me. It had about 300 miles on it since the restoration, but had been sitting in a shop with a bad roof......This is why I am here, I want to build all new bodywork in aluminum.....that is why I came, I have done a lot of other stuff but not my Indian yet......

That is quite a goal Terry.... if it is 102 in October there will definatly be something running out of me................john

Yes that's the one. I have had the front fender apart for quite a while and have made the tooling to do the skirts. I hope to make several sets of bodywork (all of the sheetmetal parts) .....
