I'm there! Camping in the shop, eh? Got heat? Might be easier to get me going in the morning if I don't have to walk to the shop  .
Should have my Anders Hammer MKII done by then (just need to fab the motor mount :D ), and might be able to bring my excuse for an e-wheel along too, if it'll help. Well, bringing the wheel depends on how many pieces I have my truck in by that time ................... if I'm back to one of my cars, it might be a bit tight for space. I can bring my usual assortment of tools too - hammers, bag, stand, stump and powered bead roller (again, if I'm driving the truck - that bead roller eats up the trunk space :) ).
I'll probably drag a buddy or 2 along with me - contact info for accomodations might help :) .

Hi Johnny,
I heard a rumor that the CEO of Bugly Tools in a effort to insure good attendance at the April Bugly Meet is considering awarding as door prizes to all attendees 1
free share of Bugly Tools INC.
That way Bugly has partners in crime. The Bugly Tool Motto " We steal from the other guy and pass the saving on to you"
Is there any truth to this?

I'm hoping to come. It would be much better for me if it were the weekend before though. The SunNFun flyin starts on the following Tuesday and I'll have to leave Sunday, drive straight home, then straight down to Florida.... I'll try.
You guys that live within driving distance are so, so lucky. April Fool's Meet, you gotta be kidding. What a fitting day for a meet at Bugly Tools. If you can make this one, you should make the effort. Make sure you take some headache medicine for that ache that you get behind your ears when you laugh too hard. John V. O.

Hi All!
Just like to say thanks to all the people who are planning to attend in April. We picked April 1st for the Bugly company picinic and customer appreciation days because that is the first weekend I have off in the New Year, (hoping you still make it Kerry). It looks like its going to be a pretty good time, about 15 people have said they will be coming. Going to have to buy some more metal now! Will get the hotel number up soon. Thanks,
Uncle Johnny, Acting president of Bugly Tools (just while the old man is on vacation or was that a photo shoot for his speedo calendar!!).

ok lets post lodging. the Super 8 motel Staunton, next door to the dairy queen and RJs lounge, it's the only motel in town. thats right you would think a town of 5,000 would have more than one hotel, but we dosen't ! so super8.com or the Bugly bring your own bedding seems to be it. you know when bugly tools and services is one of the major employers that things are tight. were not the top employer in town but were in the top 1,000 and as far as we know one of the very few international ! so make your new years resolutions now , lets quit wasting our april fools day holiday at home, let's waste it amoung family at the april fools metalmeet regional and bugly tool and supply appreciation days gathering.

I suppose I should let you know that I am planning on coming to the April Fool's meet if there is room for me, so you'll know how to properly disperse the princely sum of $10.00 that Bugly Tool and Services have so generously budgeted for the Wing Ding.
Since it is such a well known International company, I have already made advance reservations at the motel, got my passport picture taken and got my shots updated. Before I booked my transportation passage from Omaha Nebraska, I was on my knees beg......er INFORMING my wife that I was going, and the first words out of her mouth were "You've got to be kidding, this is an April Fools joke isn't it?" I assured her that it was on the up and up, I think.
Seriously, been a bodyman off and on for 50 years. took Ron Covell's class, no major tools, don't even have a stump, no true metalshaping knowledge or skills but interested in learning some, if not too late at 65 years. I can learn quite a bit by watching pros and asking stupid questions.

hello to all and thank you for your intrest in the april fools meet at Bugly tools and services international headquarters. looks like a really good metalmeet regional forming here, plenty of knowledge starting to gather. if anyone has any request for what they want to see ? let us know and we'll try to brush up on our demonstration in that area and the people allready commited can do the same. these events aren't about learning from me, it would be a verrry short event if it were. there about sharing information and learning skills from those who attend. we have a wheel. louver press, beadroller and can supply a stump or two ! the knowledge is coming from the folks ( read that family ) who choose to attend and share. just 85 + - days till liftoff, depending on when you want to arrive so start making plans now, i'm going to start making plans in a few days or so myself ! roger

Hey Guys,
Got another motel thats just down the road in the next town. The County Inn motel & cafe and mini storage, I-55, Exit 37, Livingston, IL, the phone number is 618-637-2600. The rooms are priced 1 full size bed $38.95 sleeps 2 or double $43.95 sleeps 4, those figures are tax included.
Hi Brandon, glad your planning on making it! Hope you bring the swamp meet project.
It looks like its going to be a pretty good size meet. Quite a few locals have expressed interest.

Well, if nothing else, this should show that the community is starving for meets. Maybe everyone has cabin fever already. I am glad to see this and the other meets getting organized. I will attend as many as possible this year, and if my health improves some I may even host one.
The enthusiasm that everyone is showing is great. It seems that after a person attends one meet that they just can't wait for the next. The next thing you know they come to the big dance in October.
With the diverse group that will attend, learning something new shouldn't be a problem. I always learn new stuff and enjoy the atmosphere at the local meets.
I know that Roger and Uncle Johnny will do their Bugly Best to have a good meet, and a good time will be had by all.....can't wait..............john

Roger, Thanks so much. This is such a a great group. I've been lurking / learning for quite a while now, I can't wait to get together and share knowledge, and meet the famous owner and CEO of Bugly Tools International. You aren't too far up the road, I'll have to pull myself out of my shop and offer apprentice duties like helping you get that oil burner going or something  .
Thanks Again,

The price I got Friday was approx. one C note per sheet. Seemed kinda high. Did not try for any kind of discount.
I know of the following possible source....
Shapiro
Cardinal
Ryerson
Sligo
As big as St. Louis is and the proximity to the middle of everything, we ought to be able to easily find it and at good prices.
Want me to check around for 19 ga. price and availability?
DAVID
hi Dave. i'll have to say i don't know. i'm thinking we were paying aboyt $65 a sheet at oblong ? this short term memory thing is a bother most of the time. we were looking at $45 a sheet 4x10 22ga at shapiros ? didn't get over to the other steel supply shop yet. still trying to find an address for jamie at st. louis used electrical motors for you. most of my time right now is tied up trying to get our free wasteoil burner to run, $500. into it with no heat yet.

I don't know if this has any bearing on the upcoming event, but it seems odd.
The Staunton Bi monthly Gazette
Police in Staunton have been baffled by the recent theft of laundry from the outdoor lines of residents. According to Sherrif Horace J. Higginbottom the crimes started about two weeks ago. Now numbering as many fifty separate incidents, Task Force personel say that approximently 90 garments are missing, primarily T shirts although one Pink dress was reported missing also. "It's usually such a quiet community", one resident was quoted as saying.
Police told residents at the meeting held at the hog processing plant to be on the look out for an oddly painted bus that has been spotted driving the local backroads recently.

Roger....
I was reading this posting..and if I'm understanding this right, I just have to find my way to your place in IL and bring along a project to work on...and then just hang out with everyone?
Too Cool!!!
I'm too poor for anything but a place on the shop floor...So don't make a reservation at the motel for me.
I'd love to put a few louvers in my Model A hood... ..and see what everyone can do with the stump, etc.
I have a Harley tank that I'd love to widen a bit...I have 5.1 gals of capacity right now, but it's for the Iron Butt ride Sportster, 1000 miles in 24 hours or less..(I'd like to add some more gas capacity)...and the less you have to stop and buy gas the better off you are on this one...I'd like to make a panel for the top, my idea is to widen it 4 inches in front, and 2 inches in the rear, and eliminate some of the "cored out areas" underneath......and make up a hammer form to put a large speedometer into the top. I've already made up the tunnel part from some .062" CRS....That alone will give me some more internal volume. And with any luck before 1 April, I can make up a fixture to hold everything together for assembly. And make up the mounts to attach it to the frame.

Mark, your grasp of the situation is extremly right on. this is as informal a meet as we can keep it. theres shop floor to sleep on a couple portalets for comfort, a shop icebox. there should be metalmeet people and local car and shop people here, all nice people. metalmeet people that haven't met eachother previously become family in about an hour. the rest of the weekend is benchrace , hammer ,explore and in my case BS. we're hoping that Shopdog and Imperial can attend and display there wares/share there knowledge. anyone who has products to sell/display ( ie metalmeet tshirts, shrinkingdisc, videos, ballbat hammers ect. ) let us know and we'll try to accomidate you. there will be benches, stumps, louver press ( bring the A hood ) wheels, hammers, welders ( stick,spot,oxy/act,mig,tig ) beadrollers, noise !
i guess what i'm saying is come to have fun, learn, share the knowledge, enjoy the people, and since it's all FREE were giving a Bugly double your money back guarantee !(taxeslicencinglocalrestrictionsstateregulationsm ayapplyoffernotvaladwhererestrictedorimpracticalof fermayvarybylocationandsubjecttochangewithoutnotic e)

Did I read your description correctly? Did you expand the Bugly meet to a week?
metalmeet people that haven't met eachother previously become family in about an hour. the rest of the week is benchrace , hammer ,explore and in my case BS.
Okay, Phil, you only went halfway with this one. If the "alleged" person is driving around in an "alleged" muppet bus,(wait, I didn't say that, did I?), "allegedly" picking up inventory for the April Fool's meet, shouldn't someone post a picture of the "alleged" muppet bus, for those that haven't seen it? I looked back, and did a search, but all I got was a bunch of little squares with the little red X in them, and the pics of Roger's muppet bus wouldn't come up. (Not saying, of course, that the "alleged" muppet bus, and Roger's muppet bus would be the same one, though.) John V.O.
Oh, you guys are gonna have a Bugly good time at the April Fool's Meet. I really, really wish I could be there.

I found this artist's rendering while passing through the local post office stating; POLICE ARE LOOKING FOR THIS VEHICLE!
Okay Phil, ya got me. Where did you find the picture of this bus (or shall we say, alleged bus) that looks a lot like Roger's Muppet bus? Lets be politically correct here, and say the police are looking for a bus that "allegedly" looks like this bus.
Maybe its a good thing that I can't make it there with you guys for April Fool's. I can feel that hurt behind my ears already, from laughing too much. JVO

Imperial will be attending for sure, Lord willing and the creeks don't rise that is. I'm not bringing the trailer so we won't have a big selection of machines for folks to use/buy. Whatever will fit under the camper shell on the pickup. If anyone has an interest in a particular model, please contact me and I'll be sure to bring at one for you to play with, no obligation. Otherwise I'll probably only bring 2-3 machines and which ones may be driven by what's handy and easy to load.
As usual, free delivery to the event.
I'll have to head out mid day Sunday along with Richard 'ShopDog" Kleinschmidt. We have to be in Lakeland Fl on Tuesday for SunNFun so we have to get back to my place, hook up the trailer and hit the road.

CHEEP,SHAMELESS, COMMERCIAL ANNOUNCEMENT, well thats what it is. i won't mention any prices- it's not allowed , and because i don't know any yet. Bugly toolS in an effort to defray costs of the April Fools Meet has had printed up some Bugly t-shirts with logo and slogan. there grey with red and black graphics, and look swell, pictures soon. uncle johnny and the rest of the bored directors will meet tomorrow at a secret location to discuss how bad we plan to rip -- i mean to assimilate a fair price for such quality merchandice as we have accumulated. mostly 100% cotton 6oz and probably made at a foreign subsidary of Bugly toolS but printed by an indipendent jobber in the good ol USA. they will be avaliable hopefully on metalmarket , at the April Fools Meet, at mm06 and by pm.
on a less commercial note plans for the April Fools Meet are progressing nicely, portoilets have been ordered, which should relieve some anxiety expressed by the neighbors. exibitors are confirmed, thank you Kerry and Richard. stumps are cut and cleaning of the shop has been discussed.
thank you for not throwing vegitable matter or large sharp objects, roger

Will you have any in black or camouflage?
How about a .... er...ah...."cold weather masks"? For those of us with unheated workshops... of course.
Okay, I know I can't make it to the meet, but what do I have to do to get a shirt? Am I gonna have to hire some local homeless person to show up? Do I have to ask someone who is going to be able to make it to buy a shirt for me? Or, are they going to be offered for sale to NON-participating members, that will only be there in spirit? Oh, come to think of it, if I just wait, they'll probably be on e-bay in the near future, if there's even a remote market for them. Someone will copy them for sale, I'm sure. John V.O.

I'm not new to the forum, but I haven't visited in quite some time. Yesterday I came back and noticed the announcement for the April Fools Meet and also noticed it will be held close to where I live (St Louis County). I'd like to attend to get some help with a metal work project; repairing a motorcycle fuel tank.
The tank is from a 1974 Ducati 750 Sport, which is a fairly rare machine that has received lots of interest from collectors for many years. Although not well documented, it is accepted that there were less than 2000 of these machines built over a 3 year period. I've owned this bike since 1975 and used to participate in club road racing events with it, where all the damage to the tank was done - I used to fall down often, which led me to realize that I wasn't a racer.
The tank has had both sides bashed in pretty good, which at the time I had repaired by a professional bodyman. The last time it was damaged I conducted the repairs myself. I had the brilliant idea that I could pop the dent out by pressurizing the tank with compressed air. I rigged up plugs & such and put about 50 PSI inside. Things happened sort of fast (the dent didn't come out), but I knew something happened. Eventually I realized that the pressure blew the bottom of the tank downward, which in turn pushed he sides of the tank outward about 6 inches -oh my! I was able to bring the sides back in pretty well by shaping a 2X4 to fit into the backbone of the bottom panel, resting the tank on my thighs, and beating the bottom back to where it used to be with a 2-lb sledge hammer - bruised my thighs something terrible. At that time I gave up on my pressurizing idea, filled the dents with copious amounts of body putty, and shot a new coat of paint on it. That was back around 1980. I also had another tank/seat combo for the bike which I used most the time so this tank has sat on the shelf ever since.
I'm in the process of restoring the bike after sitting in the corner of the garage since 1988. Recently I pulled the Sport tank down out of the rafters - naturally the paint & underlying putty was all cracked up. I've ground off most all of the paint & old putty to reveal a wrinkled, stretched mess. I've also discovered that the filler neck was replaced with one from a Honda prior to me purchasing the bike - another long story. I've tried to source a replacement tank, but have not had any luck finding one within my budget.
I’m hoping to attend the meet with my tank & get a good start on repairing it. I don’t necessarily need to get the metal perfect, i.e., no plastic, but of course less is better. I’m fully prepared to cut the bottom out to gain access to the dents and for replacement of the filler neck (which I have). There are a couple places where the metal has kinked into a tight radius, which I have no idea on how to remove. And the general shape of the tank needs some help in a few places. I have a couple good reference books with a number of pictures of new and restored examples. Generally speaking I don’t have any specialized metal shaping tools, not even a welder. But I do have some sheet metal experience gained from my years as an A&P mechanic working for Rockwell Intl./Sabreliner. If you have room for one more attendee, I’d greatly appreciate it. Any and all help graciously accepted.
Thanks for hosting the event. This is a great group with great cause – to preserve a skill/art form in a world full of button-pushers.

Hi Joe. A couple pics would be handy, but from what you are describing it MIGHT be easier to make new sides and cut out the earlier damage. There will be a few bike guys, and a LOT of people that would be willing to give you a hand at the April Fools meet. If you can make it, I'd definately do so. Hope to see you there.

I haven't had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Pfalzgraf (Cindy) but if she is anything like the father/son half (kind and generous people!) anything she comes up with will be delicious. Thank you Bugly crew, this sounds like it will be a really fun weekend! As stated early in the thread, Rick and I are attending, the two boys (Josh and Caleb) want to come also, but thought I should check with you guys. (?)

Hey Roger and Cindy and Johnny......
Now that I got my BS Tuxedo coming, I'm ready for the trip. All I have to do is figure out how to get thru this snow. Two feet in the last couple of weeks, yowser, but as long as JD and the snowblower doesn't crap out, I'm there. Hell, I've got a Polaris Sled if it gets to that, so I'll be there if I'm still alive. (not that you could tell the difference at times, according to my wife). Never would have guessed there were so many April Fools out there. Nice hugh!

David, the only experience I've had with that type of tig was when Jay Clear brought his scratch start TIG to Dutch's first MetalMeet. You literally had to 'scratch' the metal to start the arc. Jay had it down but all I did was ruin the tungsten and stick it to the metal....:???:

Directions....uhhhh OK,
Start the arc by lightly tapping the tungsten on the grounded surface to be welded. Pull back slightly to maintain the arc without allowing tungsten to fuse to the surface.
Or if your machine was made in Asia, you may prefer the Engrish version:
Start of flow of electron due to rapid put of tungsten to surface welded being grounded. Back put easy to maintein arc for keeping tungsten fusing upon.
See isn't that easy? Kind of like that just before the puddle falls on your foot thing...

In the best tradition of Bugly, we ripped off their idea and adapted a phrase that Randy Ferguson accidently mentioned around us for our own sign/slogan. Then it was just a matter of copying Tucks sign and a little photoshop trickery and volia...

Well, it wouldn't exactly be a Dixie reference, but if you are wanting regional movie cues, you could toss in a bit of Deliverance. Most people that aren't from the South think of the region being depicted there as being part of the South.

I never realized how guys on this site are from the St. Louis area.
Do you have room for one more on Saturday?
I will be avaliable all day on Friday if you need some help setting up or with any thing else.
Is there a sheetmetal brake that will be avaliable at the meet???
Also as I order steel I will ask around and see if anyone stocks or will stock 19 ga. in the area.(that would be nice to have close)

Yeah it feels like a three ring circus at the shop right now. Were trying to get everything set up for the meet. We know what kind of tools we have for everybody to use but I think were going to need some more hand tools. Who can bring what? If anyone can bring hand tools and if you can let me know so we know how to set the shop up it would be greatly appreciated.
We know Kerry is bringing some e-wheels and Richard is bringing some power hammers. We now have a 4 foot box in pan break coming.
If you bring tools please don't forget to put your name on them.
Please bring the appropriate safety equipment. Eyes, ears and hands.
If you want to bring a welding helmet please feel free to do so.

Johnny, what kind of tools do you suggest? I'm beginning to wonder if my truck is ever going to get done, so I may end up driving the car. My little Grand Prix will limit me to basically just bringing hand tools. Hammers, dollies, mallets, a slapper or 2 ......... my usual collection of stuff, without the power tools.............and my bag and stand, of course.
Still got that Model A frame and doors you were telling me about? I may have to do some Buglying of my own  !

Hey Doug, welcome to MetalMeet. There is no cost unless you spend it for getting back and forth, and eating or sleeping. Plenty of shop floorspace to sleep on, (free), but I would suggest a cot. Roger, Cindy, and Johnny are going to a lot of work to put on a FREE regional meet. But that's just who they are.

Johnny, if I have to bring the car, the tipping wheel set up might be out of the equation, since the stand for my bead roller is quite hefty and takes up a lot of space. I could slap some insurance on the Monte again and drive it - I know the bead roller fits in it :) .
My hand tools and my latest Anders Hammer should fit in the car without destroying the suspension  . The bead roller and the wheel might have to stay home though.
Anyone bringing an HF bead roller? I can bring my tipping dies for it and leave my bead roller at home ......................... Or, I guess I could remove it from the stand and clamp it to a bench.
Trying to figure out how I'm going to get stuff done, get stuff ready, work for a living, finish my truck and be ready to go EARLY on the 31st :D

Tim D. the tipping dies will fit our hf beadroller so just bring them if you will and yourself of course.

After my personal inspection of Bugly International, I have to admit I was and still am duly impressed. Wow what a location and the buildings are second to none I have seen.
They even look better than the photo of you beside the artist's rendering of the BS, Int. Campus.
Is it possible to get a distributorship for Middle Earth? I don't recall that being taken yet.
Here is a sample poster as that seems to be the immediate requirement of newer distributorships.

Hi David. No flames this time, was thinking of lettering it if I have the time. Sprayed the first couple coats of single stage, will block sand tomorrow and spray two/three more then shoot a couple coats of silver/white pearl over it. Then clear.

Let's see, To start, usually I use BaseCoat/Clearcoat for the quality of appearance but have this can of Single stage laying around so am using it. The term Single stage comes from the process of once you mix the appropiate Reducers and Hardener you spray it and you are done, it hardens to a shine whereas B/C you are required to spray a coat of clear to get the shine as the basecoat flashes to a flat appearance.
I am adding a step by block sanding the paint with a flat sanding block and 600 grit and water. For a tool it's kind of overkill but I want it really smooth.
After all of the sanding is done you rehang the parts, wipe them down with a gentle wax and grease remover and wipe dry. Then rub a tack rag (cheesecloth with a light adhesive) to pick up any loose dust.
Mix the single stage 2 parts color to 1part reducer and 10% hardener, stir well and filter into the gun (High volume low pressure, gravity fed) and spray. Generally you want to keep the gun 6" or so away from the panel, but I am using a gun setting that Randy turned me on to and spray aroung 3" away, you really have to move though. Spray a quicky tack coat and let the reducer evaporate (flash off) depending on temp, 15-20 minutes, then spray a heavier coat and let that flash. Spray until you are happy with the appearance then fog, (quicky, wavy passes 10" away roughly) this will lay the metalic a bit closer to the surface and reduce the chances for zebra stripes (bands of heavy metalic on the surface)
Let dry AT LEAST 5 hours so that most of all the reducer with have cured before applying any clear or as the paint continues to dry, small bubbles will appear in the clear (solvent pop). Clear on single stage is not required but sure gives it a great finish.
I am going to mix Silver/White powdered pearl to the first couple coats of clear. 4 parts clear to 1 part hardener and a little mound of pearl on a stir stick. MIX WELL! so that the pearl platelets are completely dispersed other wise you will get clumps when you spray. Then spray 2-3 more coats of clear and let dry a day or two. Then wet sand with 1500-2000 grit and buff.
Phil
Oh crap, wrote this whole dang article THEN saw the word, "Lettering" on your post. I'm still trying to teach myself Pinstriping/Lettering so am not very good yet. What I'M going to go is draw everything out with a Stabilo pencil, outline the letters with a striping brush the fill in using a 1/2" wide lettering brush. Depends how it turns out if it remains though. Work has been REALLY slow starting up, may be working, may not. Might not have time. Will have to see. WILL be at the Bugly Meet though. P.

What color is your SS? Pearl don't hide for sour owl ****. Need white to cover under pearl. I just painted a Mustang conv. white pearl. Took 1 gallon of HOK pearl after it was white, before the clear. You have the advantage of using pearl additive and you can add more. Should look great, probably won't be able to use it, afraid to scratch it, LOL. Good Luck, see you there.

Hi Ron. It's Charcoal Met. The pearl won't jump out on it, will still give a prism effect when the sun hits it. I tend for subtle paint designs...usually. As for scratches, it's a tool, paint's to keep it from rusting.... but it's also a gift so I guess I'm just showing off a bit! (LOL!)

It sounds like Friar or others need (PLEASE) to bring a Digital Camera to preserve the action on film (or what ever is the politically correct term for digital film).
Still shot are great as we have seen, but the movies are an area where certain demonstrations can be represented more precisely.
It is getting exciting with more and more of the artistic and creative sides beginning to be revealed.
Phil and Gleeser have joined into the arena.
