Gator,

I'm working at Fort Monroe, VA (~Hampton), just across the bay from Norfolk. It looks like that's about 225 miles from you.

A schedule I released this morning shows activity going through mid-April. If we apply more bodies if may get shorter.

Coming up there some weekend for a day would be great!

I'll contact you offline about trying to find a date, probably after the first of the year.

Hey John, just call Gator (Rick) on his cell. His number is in the post just above. Or just post it here. He's making a list, and checking it twice. You would be very welcome. Give it a try.

I will be there, I will put in leave this week. I am a beginner, I have some tools and will bring them. I don't have any projects, but I would love to help and learn anyone with their projects. or I could just learn how to shrink using tucking forks. I am excited and can't wait.

Hi. I'm totally new at metalworking, but very interested. I'd like to attend the meet, Gator, if you're allowing newbies. The only time i do metalwork is when I have to fix something that I don't want to replace. Duh, I gues you never heard that before-it sounded more intelligent while I was typing it! Thanks-Jim.

Welcome to MetalMeet Jim, you will learn a lot, and meet a great bunch of guys. Gator's meet promises to be a great one. There will be a lot to watch and do so don't hesitate. Good to have you onboard.

Hi. I'm totally new at metalworking, but very interested. I'd like to attend the meet, Gator, if you're allowing newbies.

Like Jim, I'm new to metalworking, though I've done woodworking for years as a hobby, so spending time on things that can damage body parts if you aren't paying attention is something I'm used to (Still got all my fingers too!). Gator's event sounds like great fun, though I'm not sure I could help with much other than holding things or helping to lift and carry. I've got a fair bit of "book learnin'", but very little actual experience. I'd love to watch what others are doing though!

I live about 20 miles south of Frederick, so it's certainly an easy event to get to for me. Are details of exactly how to get there available? Or should those who don't know just call the number given when the date gets closer?

I've been watching all the shows I can find that involve any metalworking, trying to pick up information and see how its done. All the bike-building shows, Trucks!, etc., and I've been reading books and slowly working on learning by doing. I just finished a small welding table based on plans from one of my books...with some mods (of course! ;) that occured to me while I was building it. So far I've acquired a few small tools (grinders, abrasive chop saw, Harbor Freight bender), and a couple of welders (one O/A, one small MIG), but haven't had time to use them as much as I'd like yet. The results so far are good though.

Years ago I even did a little blacksmithing with a friend who was into knife making, but I wouldn't say I know much about that either.

If interested, but inexperienced, folks are welcome, I'd love to attend and meet others who are also interested.

BTW, I found this group by looking over the pictures from last year's Chantilly, VA bike show (I'm planning on going tomorrow to this year's) and seeing a banner with the URL on it...thanks, whoever put that up!

Hey Mike, glad to have you join us. I think you will find what you need here. You don't need to worry about what to do at Gator's, there is always something going on, even if it is just watching and learning. Give Gator a call, his cell number is (240)674-2101. He will fill you in on everything you need to know. His Meet is shaping up to be a exciting event.

Thank you! I'll do that.

BTW - I went to the Chantilly bike show today, and while there were a lot of nice bikes, some decent music, a number of pretty girls, and a couple of people I've seen on TV, there weren't any folks selling metal working machines like the pics showed last year. Sigh.

I and one of my employees are going to try to make it, if we can get away. I have two groundup projects that have to be done by early summer so I'm not sure.

I'm about 3 1/2 hours east of you on the Eastern Shore.

We were there last year when the show was on New Years Day. We demoed as much as they would let us and they allowed us to do one 'seminar'. Wasn't that good of a show but it got us started with the bikers. We decided not to do it this year.

Well, April 28th is the last day on my current project schedule down at Ft. Monroe, VA.

I think that delaying my return home by a few days is exactly what is called for here.

I'll book that last trip today.

I'm looking forward to this.

BTW, looking at a map, I see that I was near you on Christmas. My wife and I were in Poolesville that day, visiting her sister.

I'll do that soon, thanks! I've been spending my free time fixing up the house and working on Montgomery County HOG web site improvements lately, but I'm hoping to get back out in the garage soon...especially if it starts to warm up!

Sorry to hear that you've been spending your time on less pleasant activities. Hope you are feeling better.

I'm actually just south of Rockville, but Gaithersburg is close enough for government work. ;-)

Were you working at the expo, or just sight seeing?

Don't let him kid you. Gator worked hard. It may look like fun and games but working a booth demoing and asking questions all day will drain your butt!

He says it was a lot of hard work. If it was anything like what happens at the wood working shows, I can understand that!

I'm a bit west of your old area...just off Falls, south of I-270. For now anyway.

I'm planning on coming, but I won't be camping out, don't need feeding, will mostly just be watching and maybe asking questions, and can bring some snacks to share if that will help out.

I'm still going to call you Real Soon Now to say hi, get directions and maybe chat about local metal suppliers or whatever else seems of interest. It's just been real busy out lately. Just about got my 1/2 bath rebuilt though, so that should be slacking off soon.

I was planning to get the home improvements done this weekend, and might still, but I just learned that I have a funeral to go to...for the guy who first got me interested in blacksmithing and metal working a long time back.
