View Full Version : UK / European MetalMeet
After a brief descussion on a different thread it seems that we have enough folks interested to organise a UK / European MetalMeet.
I can host this event at my workshop in Cleethorpes N.E. Lincolnshire for anyone thats interested. Space may be an issue depending on how many people want to attend.
So just the when and how many days ?
When : the workshop is unheated so Nov thru Feb is probabily out. So March / April time maybe ?
How many days : I'm fairly flexable so do people want just a weekend or extend it Friday thru Monday or possibly longer ?
We've got 6 months so lots of time to sort this out.
Any thought ?
regards
Jon

Jon,
I'd like it to be april (warmer) and thursday through monday would be great then people can choose if they want to attend all days or just some of the days.
Just my 2 euro cent
hi Anders, thanks for the prompt reply.
I'm cool with any date so no problem for me.
If you came over on the ferry into Hull it arrives in Hull early in the morning so you could be at the shop before 10 am. It sails in the evening so a mid afternoon return to the boat would maximize hammer time !
It's a pity you don't know anyone from Holland to share the trip with ;) LOL

Hey Jon,
I "know" Ben and Emile. Driving down to Holland and go with them wouldn't be a problem for me!! http://www.metalmeet.com/forum/images/icons/icon10.gifhttp://www.metalmeet.com/forum/images/icons/icon6.gif

Hi all,
A uk meet would be great!
I'm just getting settled at home and hope to be in my workshop making some noise within a couple of months so hopefully I'll get some posting done asking for some help soon.
I should be able to bring my wheeling machine, tig and some hand tools if that helps. Have you got a wheel yet jon?
I'll be availible anytime and I'll come early to set up! So lets make it happen.
Dave
Hi Dave,
Bringing you wheel and stuff would be great. I've got a 42 inch frost wheel and I am in the process of building a smaller wheel for home.
we will make a list of what tools people can bring closer to the time.
speak soon

Jon and all on this thread.
Thanks for offering to host Jon. Like I said I would love to attend and I will help however I can. Just ask or list what may need to be done/organised. As for when? well my 2 cents worth would be early April as we have had some decent weather the last couple of Aprils and it ties in nicely with school holidays, if that is a factor for anyone other than me! My only reservation, from my point of view is, we (Julia, my wife & I) are having a baby in Jan. :) and this may affect my attendance though she thinks it wont be a problem by then, I would hate to say I could do this that and the other and then have to let all you chaps down at the last moment. I'll stay positive I'm coming!!
Regards to all

Hi Bryan, We just had a little metalshaper 3 weeks ago so I know what you mean. I'm sure after 3 months of running around you will deserve a little break !

I'm very interested, subject to the inevitable constraints of juggling work, early spring sounds great.
I'm very much a beginner, so I'm afraid my contribution might be limited, but if there's anything useful I can offer I'll be happy too.
Jonathan
how many days ? 14 days ? Emile.

Hi All,
Looking at April dates. Easter is the weekend of 15/16 so should probably be avoided as some may have family commitments.
How about the weekend before 8/9 or weekend after 22/23
Are any of these dates a problem for anyone?
Which do you prefer ?

I'm easy on dates though if I had to express a preference I would vote for the 8th 9th. Whatever is decided I will be along. Maybe the Euro travellers need to see if Ferries are cheaper pre or post Easter?

I could bring a full set of tinsmith's stakes, flypress, blacksmith's tools etc. I'm more of a blacksmith than a tin basher but I'm sure I would learn plenty of useful stuff.

Rotterdam is where we leave if we are going,
€ 360 round trip and then you are allowed to stay 5 days total ,staying longer is a different story.

Hi Ben,
That's about £243... not much different from the Zebrugge/Hull trip. Don't know if there's a time limit on that one.
THANKS... I don't feel a bit older than yesterday http://www.metalmeet.com/forum/images/icons/icon10.gif
Bryan, Neil & Bob, look forward to meet you all
Bob, I've got a No2 & No4 flypress but no tooling, so bringing stuff would be an advantage, we will have to sort out who's bringing what closer to the time.
Anders, Happy Birthday , how old :o
Anders, Ben & Emile, hope you can make it , but I understand if you can not because of cost. Another option may be to fly in to Humberside airport with KLM. The airport is 10 miles from my house and you can sometimes get a good deal.
Are the ferry costs different for the two dates, which one is cheaper ?

Hi Jon,
THANKS! "Only 46"... still a child
Flying with KLM from Billund (via Amsterdam) will be £248... just about the same as ferry! BUT! Then I won't be able to bring a lot of tools :-o :-o :-o
I'll get there ......some way!!!!!!!

So just how big is your workshop?
Hi Neil,
The workshops are quite big, but they are full of stuff ( old vehicles & tools & Junk). 50x30 + 24x20 + 24x24 + 6 lockups@12x20
The more people that want to come , the more tidying up I need to do :)
sub 30 is cool  but many more than that and some serious tidying is required :o
At the moment we've had < 10 people showing interest so no problemo

Sounds like you have plenty of room there, though I know what you mean about the tidy up.
My projects seem to expand to more than fill the space available. I build an extention to help out and its soon filled with fresh projects that I might live long enough to complete.

 tell me about it, If it's not projects it's tools.
I just need some time to refurbish/use the tools on the projects that are cluttering up the place.

Ok,
It seems like basing it around the weekend of the 8/9th April is favorite.
I'll book some holidays from work and will be in the shop from the Thursday thru til the Tuesday. Come for 1 day or more !
I'll start a new thread after MM05 outlining where, when, aims etc, so people can find the info without having to surf this rambling thread.
look forward to seeing you all in April.

Too bad y'all aren't having this a bit closer to an airport! Closest international airport I can find is Manchester! Sure, an unlimited mileage rental car is cheap enough, but that's still a lot of driving on the wrong side of the road :) . Leeds is a bit closer .................. and over $100 more (hey, I'm cheap!)
Don't know if there's any possibility I could make it, but, yeah, I'm doing some research.
Jon, you've made the trip from here home, any travel tips? Never been outside the States, but I've always wanted to visit England :) .

Just for thinking purposes, how far is your place from Heathrow. I'd expect that Heathrow or Gatwick would be the cheapest destinations in Brittan from the US. I'd love to go back to the UK and then over to visit Ben and Anders but April is a difficult time event wize and my long suffering wife probably won't suffer that much play time....

Hi all
I'm based near the south coast so the ports of Poole, Southampton, and Portsmouth are all easy access for me, I'm also close to Bournemouth airport and Southampton airport so if anyone sees themselves getting to these destinations I can collect/pick up with ease. As far as Heathrow and Gatwick are concerned I can detour to them on route or maybe even pick up the day or days before,it is only a couple of hours away. Anyone considering a trip from anywhere to this meet find out what you can and just ask I'm sure someone will have a travel solution.
After all the UK is not the largest island so nowhere is too far away it's just the clogged up road network that slows us down!!

Yeah, the UK is less than 1000 miles from end to end so distance is seldom a problem.
Hi All, would be great to see ya.
When I traveled to MM04 I took a train from here to Manchester and they caught a plane to indy via phy. Next year perhaps a direct flight to Chicago.
UK Airport distances in miles :
16 Humberside (KLM / North West)
90 Leeds
105 East Midlands
130 Manchester
140 Birmingham (sorry Kerry not Alabama)
190 Luton
220 Heathrow
260 Gatwick
Ferry Terminals:
36 Hull
300 Dover
Just checked flight prices . I could fly to Chicago this Friday and return late Monday for £220 ($385). Long weekend at Metalmeet !!! arg :x .
Hope that helps
