I have been using my Pre-hard upper wheel for about a month. It still looks new and I know it will hold up well. I use it mostly on aluminum and it does a great job. The only thing I may do to it is polish it up.

what is the reason for not using a hardened upper wheel? i assume to prevent lower wheel damage?

Yes, and to be able to wheel weldings without damaging the upper and thus "print" marks in your panel/sheet
