Anyone interested in an Oklahoma meet? I would be willing to host it at my shop. I have a Pullmax and an air drill powered helve hammer that we could play with. I could possibly get the local english wheel anvil maker guy to join us. What do ya think?

I'm intrested Chad, you missed a fantastic time MM03. We at least need to get together with some of the other folks in this area. Are there any guys in bordering states intrested? You being near OKC is certainly a central location......maybe we could alternate locations...jb

Projects? We could always make some motorcycle parts or work on a kinetic wind sculpture or anything else. I am sure we can find something to keep busy.
John,
You are welcome to come over any time. I am usually messing around with something on the weekends. Besides you and me, I only know 2 other metalshaping fools in Oklahoma. There is Jeff the pedalcar guy in Enid. He really knows a lot of stuff but he is so busy that it is sometimes hard to meet with him. Then there is Gene the e wheel anvil maker. He lives in Edmond. I am sure he would be interested.

I'm a new member, most of my experience is in fabricating (work benches, carts, etc.) and some mechanic work. I have a '53 1-ton Chevy panel wagon I bought in Bessie OK, back in 1998. Mostly I've accumulated drivetrain parts, and some spare body pieces. Been doing a lot of spread-sheet calculations on torque, hp, top speed, etc., and accumulating tools.
I would be interested in an OK meet. I am hoping to go to the international meet in Oct. as well.

Hello James, Welcome to Metalmeet. Have you researched all the resources on this site yet? Tons of good info, and the gallery is full of works in progress, as well as finished parts and tools.
Where are you from? I live south of Tulsa, in Bixby. We need to get everyone around this area together, and if nothing else just get aquainted and beat on some metal. I confess, with the start of summer, my work skyrockets, and between that and 5 acres of yard work, keeping the cars running...blah...blah..bla. Lots of excuses I guess
I'm ready. I need to talk to the folks I do know and lets set a date. My shop has AC, ..but Chad has finished a few more tools..come on guys lets get this going............E-mail me some phone numbers, or post here! Chad! hey, give me a hollar....john

Our baby is due any day now. I don't plan on doing anything for about a month. We do need to get together. Want to try a July meeting or some time in the fall? Let me know.

John,
I am in Midland TX, which is pretty far from just about anything. But OK is relatively close, and if the timing is right, I should be able to drive up. I've been watching the forums quite a bit. I found the forum because of the chassis design discussion, I did a search, as I am planning on working on that soon, and stumbled upon Metalmeet. It has been very useful. Thanks for the response, I look forward to seeing some metal stretch!

Chad, give that baby a hammer and break it in right!
I thought you said it was due soon, I figure if we satart now we can get it together in a month to 45 days. I would like to compare my electric helve to your drill motor helve
We can always alternate shops, or sides of the state.
Anyone else?

Hi everyone. Thought I would bump this up again.
I'm new to the forum, and still haven't looked at everything on here. EXCELLENT SITE!!!
I am in northern Colorado, and would definately travel to OK to learn anything. I am a novice and new to metal shaping, but have been a hot rodder since birth. My current project is a custom 68 Chevy short bed truck. Doing a lok of custom stuff to it (shaved dash, frenched antenna, etc...) but really want to expand my skills.
Thanks again for the board, it is wonderful!

John,
Once you guys get a little closer to determining the date, let me know as I have family in Sand Springs and could always use this as a good reason to travel down your way. On a side note; a few of us in the Rocky Mountain region are tossing around the idea of a regional meet.
Thanks Much!

Myself and raferguson have been discussing having a Saturday get together at my shop in March. I am just northeast of Fort Collins, Colorado, and we would be looking for folks from anywhere between Denver and Cheyenne, and whomever else wanted to show up.
We thought that we could do a tool demo and a how-to type session rather than so a project. I am a hot rodder that is new to metal shaping, and have just bought some tools and while I have already used many of them, I need to learn the best and correct way to use them.
So our plan now is to pick a March date as well as a weather date. I will probably do a BBQ for lunch, and we can start as early and go as late as we want.
I will make a new post in January to see about interest for this.
Thanks!

Hi Bob,
Whatever assistance you may need with this, please don't hesitate to ask especially since I'm just down the road from you. I would easily be satisfied with an informal gathering similar to the grass roots gatherings that started this whole thing.
Thanks Much!

Whatever you want to bring to the table would be awesome!!! I think just having a different assortment of tools - both commercial and homemade, and to be able to learn how they are used and different applications to use them in would be priceless!
I can get sheet metal at a pretty decent price through work....the last 4' x 8' sheet of 18 gauge cold rolled I ordered was $35. So I could probably get as much as we needed and the cost per person should be very minimal.
I am in Nunn, you probably know where that is. Just south of you off of Highway 85, then about 6 miles west toward Wellington. I have a 30'x40' heated shop, air, 220v,whatever we should need to operate things, and should have plenty of room to lay out whatever everyone wants to bring.
Thanks for the offer, hope you will be here!

Gene my idea for the first one was to get everyone together and introduce some of the beginners to the equipment and maybe make some simple shapes, with some of the more advanced guys showing them.
I would like to have a meet every month or two, maybe switching sides of the state.
Lets get some suggestions on dates and places.............It probably be Feb before I can do it at my shop.........john

I'd like to be considered one of the beginners interested in attending an Oklahoma meet. I'm kinda local to you up here in the Air Cap in Wichita. Wish it was closer, but maybe I got to travel to get some shaping instructions.

John, What I've discovered at the 3-4 of these I've attended is that bowls make GREAT learning tools. They are simple, small, easy to see the effects of stretching and tuck shrinking, and don't waste a lot of time or expensive sheet metal.
At the St. Paul MM last year, there were about 15 guys standing around looking, I grabbed some steel and we cut some circles using a bucket bottom as a template. Once I demonstrated stretching and tuck shrinking, everyone got deaf in a hurry and in about half an hour I walked back into the room the the previous newbies were teaching folks who had just arrived. There were some neat bowls made that evening and the next day folks moved on to more advanced projects.
I didn't know much about flexible shape patterns at the time but imho, the next step would be to make ANOTHER just like the first using flexible shape patterns.
As you know, there are only THREE metalshaping processes, stretching, shrinking, and smoothing. Once those are somewhat mastered it's good to practice making something that 'fits' something else. It's easy to make "something" and say it is what it is. It's quite another thing to make something that fits something or duplicates something. That requires a lot more finese and application of skill.
IMHO the best way to learn is go start, and a bowl is a great learning tool. You have to crawl before you can walk and walk before you can run. Jumping in and trying to make a cycle tank or a Model A fender as a first project will more than likely lead to frustration and failure. Not to mention wasting some fairly expensive sheet metal. Making the second bowl teaches the fundaments of the three processes as well as how to make and read flexible shape patterns and should move folks from crawling to at least a wobbly walk .
Just my opinion...

OK. Checked with the family and we are good to do it here. I can clear out a good area. I have a shrinker & stretcher. I can set up a few benchtops and maybe a floor model. Put a planisher or two somewhere quite. I will have my louver machine and vice mount Ewheel done
I have a pallet of 20 ga, a little aluminum & some copper at home. I can order brass, copper, aluminum, ss or anything else that people are willing to prepay for.
There are workman comp issues and it would be best to keep people off the power machines but I could shear, break, mill etc if we needed it.
I just spoke to the Eastwood Co. engineer and he is interested in coming. Brown Tool www.browntool.com is accross town and can smell a marketing op miles away. Inovative Racing is a few miles away and has a resturant/bar in front & sales motor cycles and makes bikes in back, and the Orange County frames. Perhaps they would give us a Fri afternoon or Sat tour. Thats an old joke, Liquor in front "something" in the rear.
Feb might even be too soon. Mar 5/6 is my reserve weekend. Feb 25 or Mar 12.
Any preferences?
What I don't have are bags and hammers.

I vote for February 26-27. I spoke with Gene about me bringing machines because I didn't want to have a potential conflict with his machines and ours. He graciously informed me that he would be hurt if I was able to come and did not bring ours. So depending on timing and weather we'll come over and bring some of our stuff for folks to use also.

Chad,
Yes my shop. We haven't cleaned much since our 30th anniversary four years ago and 26FEB is sooner than I would prefer to do it but we can make that work.
I was hoping for a Fri afternoon., evening and Sat all day. I would rather not continue on Sun.
Maybe Thunder Cycles could give people a nickel tour Fri and the I could ask Thunder Roadhouse Cafe to host us.
Could anyone interested PM me with your email address and when you could get here?
We work four ten hour days and sometimes a half day Fri. I pretty much work all day Fri but we don't have people on the clock.

Perhaps just posting here would be better than PMing me. Then eveyone will know who is coming.
I think John Boogiemanz1 will be our expert metalformer, I am just a humble metalshaper ignorant of the hand craftman's ways.
Toolman Mike is on board as is Chad and Mike Nienke, Tin Head from KS.
I'll try to find records of local customers and put the word out.
If youall post on other boards or know anyone who might be interested please have them post here or post for them.

I am new to the board and metal shaping/forming though I have been using a mill/lathe for several years and just recently into CNC. I have a modified v-twin motorcycle that I am wanting to build some sheetmetal parts for (fender, tank etc.) and thus am getting into shaping/forming. My brother and I will definately be coming to this event, especially since I live in Edmond.
BTW This board is an outstanding resource!!!
Thanks,

Guys, I am not an expert. I think if we talk real nice we may get Kerry Pinkerton to do his Metalshaping 101 demo.
The first meet should concentrate on the very new folks in my opinion. Making a bowl with a hammer and bag is always a great way to start. Tucking is one of the things hardest to teach without hands on instruction.
We will need some circles cut from 18 ga. Does anyone have a nibbler with a circle cutter?
Making a buck for a simple tank may be something we want to do. Also, making a fender.

Like Gene said, post here so he has an idea of who is coming. Yes, this thread started in 2003 and wondered around awhile, but looks like it will happen next month.
Gene, I'm hoping to bring a small project I've been wanting to do, but I like the idea someone put out of making bowls and shape patterns as well. If I find no time for mine, that's great as I'm coming to learn first. And like I said in my pm to you, I'll bring what little tools I have.

Sorry to take so long to post a schedule. I spent all dang day trying to fix the CNC Plasma (perhaps the dirtiest machine ever) and then my PC or this site ate my post. Here is a copy & paste from the other site. Gee I wish they would combine.
"Bruce, That scares me. Shrieveport is a haul. I don't have any idea how many people plan to attend but bring a chair!
Schedule:
Friday 9-12: Setup. Kerry and John Brown are driving down from Tulsa in the AM and John tells me it takes a while to bolt his big units together. I'll need help so if anyone wants to come early that would be great.
Friday 1-6: Start Making stuff. I personally would like make some tucking forks and learn how to use them. I would also like to make a quick planishing hammer or two. Bring your own gun. There is some rusty pipe outside. I don't know if I'll have dies,I'm way low but I think the bolts people shape are a great idea. There will be shaping tools set up and people could get a start on projects and are welcome to bring in anything they are working on.
Saturday 9-12: Demonstations. Kerry w/ his reknowned metalshaping 101 and Roger's sounds quite interesting. He uses a hitch ball and shows you the basics with hand tools. I am really looking forward to both. John also told me I should do a deep draw with a hydraulic we have set up. I think he liked it because we us plain CR not DQ.
Saturday 12-5: Hands on and Wrap up. We'll send someone out for pizza.
PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN SAFETY EQUIPMENT INCLUDING GLASSES, GLOVES AND HEARING PROTECTION.
We have a skid of 20 ga CR for projects gradis and aluminum and a little copper we can sell at cost.
Really looking forward to it.
More later,
Gene
