View Full Version : Another warped/stretched Hood!

A guy who is helping me with my Mustang Project (http://www.a2zautoforums.com/showthread.php?t=2973&page=1&pp=10) runs a powder coating/Blasting operation. He had an employee (gone quickly!) who used excessive pressure when stripping a 1961 Lincoln trunk lid.
He has had a lot of trouble locating a replacement.
I just received a shrinking disk from John Kelly for use on the Mustang and another small project (Cougar hood) and told him I might be able to help.
The Lincoln trunk lid has a heavy X shaped frame behind the skin and the skin is pushed down/stretched between the frame members.
I'm thinking the way to start on this is to pop/stretch the depressions upward and use the shrinking disk the smooth them out.
I'm planning to practice on a '68 cougar hood with a simular problem. (It had a carburator fire which warped the center section of the hood extensivly.)
Do you think I'm on the right track in beating the low areas up and shaping with the shrinking disk?
Roy.

hi roy, you are on the right track with the shrinking disc. the disc won`t shape but it will shrink. i went on your mustang site and saw your car, you might want to make a pull on the frame machine before you cut the front clip as the buckle in the top will still be there . i have a simular project (65 fastback that took a front ender) but your car took a much heavier hit. you`ll grow to love that disc, its made me much more confident knowing if i stretch a little much that its easy to shrink and when your done the panel is stress free and happy. gary

Hi Gary,
A minor point, but...you can shape with the shrinking disc, it being a shrinking tool. I have done some shaping that had nothing to do with getting a panel back where it originally was. Technically, any shrinking is shaping.
Hi Roy,
The trick is to get the panel into as smooth of a shallow bulge as you can for even shrinking and reading the panel as it shrinks. Watch out for missed low spots away from the area you are concentrating on that will affect reading the panel.

hi john , i guess shrinking would be shaping, i was thinking that stretching would be adding shape and shrinking would be taking away shape, but on say a motorcycle fender you would stretch the center and shrink the edges so my original thought on shrinking not being shaping would be wrong. thanks for pointing that out.gary

Hi Gary,
I think most of us have had similar mental blocks...I know I have. I have to remind myself of stuff like that on a reular basis.

Hi Gary, You are absolutely correct! I think you missed this post (http://www.a2zautoforums.com/showpost.php?p=31879&postcount=42), which shows car after the pull.

I thought I'd drop an update.
The hood customer wouldn't wait. Bought one.
The hood still hasn't been fixed.
Thats the bad news.
The good news is I'm going to the meet in San Jose that John Kelly is doing.
Mustang- I haven't done a thing since I finished measureing how out-of-line things were. (except I have a plan and help drops by sometimes.)
I've been working on the house full time plus some.
(Mother-in-law coming for sister in laws wedding. "Going to stay here. Period." Said the boss.)
I expect to start on smoothing the Cougar right after Johns class.
