Can anybody recomend a metal cutting band saw. I will generally be cutting 1-2 in tubing. I dont want to break the bank but then again I dont want to be disappointed either. HF 4x6?

I've been using Grizzly saws and am happy with them! I just bought a new one and it's really working well. Check them out www.Grizzly.com

I have a 7x12 that I believe is a bigger version of the Harbor Freight 4x6 which was given to me used. It is labeled Rong Fu, but I think it is the same unit that everyone sells. I have not used it too much, but when I do it cuts great. The only thing I did was to add a good bimetal blade to it.

There is a yahoo group dedicated to the 4x6 saws (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/4x6bandsaw/)and those guys really get some work done with them. If you look at the group, there is a bunch of information about the different brands (of the same saw) and modifications that make them more efficient such as good stands, coolant systems and improved vices.

I have not paid too much attention since I don't really need a new saw, but there was some talk of a new saw that Homier (I think thats the name) sell where the head pivots and the vice is stationary. I think it is similar the this model from Grizzly (http://www.grizzly.com/products/item.cfm?ItemNumber=G9742), but much cheaper. People that have them seem to love them.

I would suggest looking at the yahoo group archives and post any questions about you have there as well. I really like my saw and it seems that I am not the only one... they all seem to love the 4x6's.

Good Luck
Tommy

Tommy,
That's the one I just got from Grizzly, and it's AWESOME!! I figured the swivel head would be handy once in a while, but I can't believe how handy it is and how much I use it!! I'm just sorry that I waited so long to get the darned thing!!

John,

Thats great!! I kinda wish I could get one, but I just can't justify spending money to buy that saw when I got mine for free!! Oh well, I guess I shouldn't complain!! I do love that swiveling head though... I recently had to miter some channel with my saw and it is a pain to set an angle with the crappy vice setup they have.

Good Luck
Tommy
