I spent a few minutes in the memberlist area and notice a signifigant number of members in Wisconsin and Minnesota. None is more than several hours drive from each other. I imagine that other members that do not list city or state or hiding nearby also.
Sharing information, Sharpening skills as Metalmeets motto states is easier if we get in touch and stay in touch with each other.
I live in St Paul, Minnesota and would be glad to coordinate a meet in the Jan, Feb 04 time frame. We will need to find a shop to host the event if possible or if not I have a heated 1,000 sq foot warehouse space we could setup in for a weekend.
Let's get a list going of inerested people and see what we can do!
Plese reply to this post or email me with you name addres and phone. Please include your screen name too so I can make connections.

Hi Richard,
Wow, you really got into the spirit of MetalMeet, thanks for taking the
initiative. :D
Hope you get some response.
Funny thing I have a hard time getting anyone to come to my shop, it seems like everyone is in the witness protection program around here. Dutch( in upstate NY) will be having a regional MetalMeet again this Spring , I'll be attending that one.

You've got that right! Then he posts the pictures! My handlers (from the witness protection program) were livid. They warned me about previous visitors.
Trouble is Paul I learned more about hand shaping sheet metal in those two days than from all the books, videos, and discussion groups.
That's why the meets are so important.
First, they get you out in the shop (which is where metal is shaped)
Second , you teach your skills and in return learn from others.

It would serve the group's purpose if more members would list their location. Then we could contact each other in a region.
I know many people like the anonymity possible on these lists, however, if you would list a general area ie: upstate New York or Mid Wisconsin you could be contacted via the message service on this board and be invited to some pretty neat regional meets, shop tours, and whatever else might be happening. If you stay hidden the group you see looks exclusive rather than inclusive.
POST, POST, POST
You are missing a lot of the benefits by being just a reader and we are missing out on your experience, opinions. and comments. If you are an expert, we need you to answer the questions for the rest of us. If you are a newbie, as I am, (and Wray and Dutch and Tom L. and many others once were), you need to ask questions of all types so the answers can flow out. Thus knowledge is shared.

Rob,
You and Richard make a good point about the anonymity. Another area that could use some attention is member profiles.
I checked the member list today and there are 578 members. But in the forum under Metalmeet Member Profiles-> members there are only 4 profiles. It would sure help if we knew what kinds of expertise are available in this group.

Hi Neal,
I always get a kick out of how so many people choose to be anonymous. Why they just don't make up a phoney name rather than
registering as "564jjjjhtl" baffles and ammuses me.
I guess it's just one of the things on my endless list of"things I will never understand".
And then there's that guy "Snotsalot"

Hi Neal ,
It would be best to e-mail me privately, if you want to stop in some time. I do have to limit how much time I can donate to the metalshaping community. I have recieved e-mails from people in the past that I have no clue who they are asking to visit. I really can't accomodate them. Someone like yourself that I've met or at least know from the group here is a different story. The funny thing is I've also recieved many e-mails from people that I do know from the internet groups that say they will visit but never do. Locals don't ask to visit much either. It's just another strange phenomenon that you can't figure out. :D
It was the initial visit of Tom Lipton and George King that led to the starting of MetalMeet (originaly named by Tom as FormFest)( see:
http://www.metalmeet.com/about.htm )
Also David Miller asked to visit several years ago after I broke my thumb in my lathe . I had invited people to my shop to help me in return for instruction. I gave David about ten days of instruction and he offered to build a website for me , well here it is , we all won big on that one. :D Our website MetalMeet.com is the result of that visit and friendship.

Wray,
Its amazing that from such a simple start has come a group that is providing the opportunity for many hundreds (probably more) of people to learn the art/craft of metalshaping.
While the news media focuses on the bad things that happen over the internet and how much money can be made or lost they have missed the really great stories like this one.
If I get a chance to be up your way sometime I will give you plenty of warning

Good morning, As people like myself and Wray work alone we do like company to get us out in the world more. We also learn a lot working with other people as the questions they ask make you think indepth more on thingsthat we don`t take time enough to look at normally.
The one thing you don`t have to worry about at Wray`s is going hungry as he has all of the local resturant menu`s handy and also who delivers to his house. I myself was glad at formfest that Wray was there to remind me that it was time to eat again or I wouldn`t have remembered at all.
I am glad to see Richard getting ready for a local meet as they are a lot of fun to get together with other people with similar interests. Every meet is a lot of fun. I also go out to Wray`s several weekends a year and make Jag parts or help him on a tool project. Dutch

Hi Richard,
let me know when you have firmed up a date and place for the regional meet, I can take a day (or two) off to help get things transported, set up, etc. if you need. I won't have my e-wheel built in time, but I have my air planishing hammer done, and it seems to work good (other than leaving some slight surface marring). I can bring my little 110v MIG and/or gas, I have a bunch of 18gauge steel, and my little lead bag and hammer.
Anyways, I'd be more than willing to help get things setup, just give me a ring or email (320-358-1077 / bcarlson@denniskirk.com).
Take care,
Ben

I've been talking to Richard about his MM next month and pretty much decided to come up and bring a bunch of wheels to play with. I'll probably bring the trailer and while I don't want to haul anywhere near as much as I took to Randy's I can bring a fair amount. Richard and I talked about the batmobile? I could also bring my 61 Imperial fender and the bondo buck.
I'll plan on bringing my swiss army sandbag stand and assorted hammers, the Lancaster shrinker stretchers on their kick frames, and at LEAST three wheels.. Anything else that someone particularilly wants me to haul up?
If anyone is interested in one of my machines, there will be no delivery or crating fees.

Any more plans for another Minnesota/WI regional? I am trying to work it out to go to the International MM05...but might not happen. Just moved back to God's Country after living in FL for a couple years. Gotta credit FL with giving me a passion for metal, even though haven't worked any yet. Anyone know anyone in the south Metro or Rochester at all? I live in Cannon Falls now, but will be moving to Rochester soon enough.
Thanks fellers.

Tony,
The Guild of Metalsmiths will be having their October meeting at Dan Pate's shop on Wed Oct 12th. Setup usually starts around 5:30 and that would be a good time to meet some people and examine some of the equipment. We have a pot luck lunch at about 6:30 and then a short meeting followed by a program of some sort. Demonstration's, tour, whatever . . .
We held a metalmeet there last fall. here is the thread.

No need to rsvp, hope to see you there.
btw. The Guild website is at http://www.metalsmith.org they are mainly blacksmiths but include everybody from sheet metal workers and silversmiths to blade smiths and the like.
As a matter of fact if you like damascus, and are looking for a nice hunting or kitchen knife, Dr. Mike Blue is one of the best in the country and he lives in Cannon Falls.
