Hey guys,

If Im going to finish the model I need to see if I can even make the body. I want to use steel instead of copper/brass since steel is used on real cars.

Anyway, Im trying to make a practice '37 Ford Fender. Im starting on the front since its the most complex, which doesnt make much sense. But if i can make the front fender, I can make the rears, and body panels, so on and so forth.

Im using one of my 1/24 scale models to get a flexible shape pattern and then I blow it up on the computer, but so far i dont know where to start. I went into photoshop and edited some pictures to try and get an idea. 3 seperate pieces welded together.

The color part is what Im making:

And below are two of the pieces I think I'd make. The blue is one piece, and the orange is one piece. Then weld those two together, and then make a light bucket:

Is that the right Idea so far? From there I dont really know where to go, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, any pics would be even better. :D

Thanks.

Hi Mike,

Making the orange piece in one piece  I think that will be to much :?:

Take a look in Wray's album. Lots of Jag pix. There are some shapes looking a lot like your's :D

Course you are :!: :!: :!:

Go for it :!:

To get the required detail at that scale, I think you are going to have to go to 24-26 ga or thinner . Easier also...........plenty strong with shape in them........solder them together.......john

Anders,

How would you suggest I "cut" up the orange piece?

John,

The fender will be little over 8" long. Do you still think I need to go thinner than 22gage? I was thinking about doing some of the detail with either weld, or lead.

If I post up some flexible template patterns, could y'all help me get started on where I should shrink/stretch?

Mike,

It might be easier if you tried scaling it up in clay first and then pulled your patterns off that.

I plan on making a foam/bondo buck once I get a rolling chassis. But for now Im just practicing to see if Im even capable, or if I would have to make it out of...the f word...fiberglass.

Why wait?
Do the modeling once, do it right and you will be ahead of the game.

The scale will still be the same for the skin, with or without the chassis. If you make it the right size and shape it will fit. You only have to worry about adjusting the mounting.

Heck, It would be kind of fun to rough out one side of the car in foam to get a feel for the whole shape of the thing, but don't worry about getting everything exactly right just yet. Focus on your fender and get that right. The rest is just there so that the fender you make blends with the rest of the model when you finish it.

The reason I want to wait is so I can mockup the wheels and have the wheel wells in the right place. I guess I could weld up a jig to hold it at ride height and turn some mockup tires out of PVC.

Print some tires on your computer the correct size and glue them to cardboard.......as a matter of fact, print the side view of the car and the top view in the proper size, and use them to help model your fender.......

If the fender is 8" long you should not have trouble with 22ga...........john

Hi Mike,

There are several ways of "cutting" the fender :D In the pics you can see 2 suggestions.

8" long and 22 gauge... you might be able to pull it of in 1 piece :!: :?:

Try it. If it isn't possible, you can always cut it and make an ajourning piece

Do you have a small e-wheel :?: If not, take a look in Tim Doty's topic "Panels for my model A", or in my album. There is a pic of a small wheel that I made from 2 small bearings and a vise grip   8)

John's suggestion about printing the wheels and the side and topview is a great idea

Gene's idea with clay also works :!: :!: The same goes for your foam/bondo mockup

John, great advice. I'll print some of my wheel/tire combo drawings out tomorrow. As far as the side profile, I did draw up a scale drawing of it. I just need to put it into CAD and plot it out.

Anders, excellent advice. Now I see the way to "cut" up the fender. I'll try some stuff out. As far as the e-wheel, no I dont have one. However if I get the lathe I will be making some anvils and making a mini e-wheel. I dont think theres much of a chance I could make it in one piece, Im not that skilled yet.

Mike,

Here's the pic of my little "E-wheel"

A vise grip, 2 rollerskate bearings, 2 bolts and 2 nuts is all you need 8)
