View Full Version : Could someone post a demo of the basics of solid riveting?

I've drilled and Cleco'd some 1/8" holes, and am ready to set some rivets. I've fooled around with some scrap sheet, but I think I could really benefit from a primer on real riveting. (I'm using brass rivets in aluminum, but I would think that good advice would apply to a variety of materials.)

I'd really appreciate seeing some words (and hopefully pictures) on the following:
-- Rivet spacing
-- Countersinking rivets and the different head angles
-- Using a rivet setter
-- Using a bucking bar, or dolly, or other backing support
-- What not to do when hand setting rivets

Thanks in advance!

Matt,
There is a book called " How to do Aircraft Sheet Metal Work" reprinted by Lindsay Publications. Within it is a 25 page chapter covering riveting. Far more than what one could post here for you.

I don't remember it being too expensive besides it covers alot of other related topics.

Thanks, Ron. I ordered the book. I think that it should help a lot.

Matt,
You can also hit almost any used book store and maybe find an old text from aircraft mechanic's school... or even better yet, an AC43.13-1A (or B). That's what we use as a guide in the aircraft industry. You can PM me if you have any specific questions. (been doing aircraft sheet metal work for 20+ years)
