Hi Metalmeet,

While browsing the Metalmeet member-list, I've noticed that many registered members are from north of the border. I'm sure that there are more Canadians here than I have imagined, in view of the fact that many people have opted not to include their location in their member profile.
I'd like to know where we Canadians are located for a variety of reasons. These include such issues such as sharing information about Canadian suppliers of tooling and materials, tips for simplifying importation of the afore-mentioned goods across the border, and especially to locate like-minded folks in my general vicinity. As Metalmeet members, we have all struck gold by finding the amazing collective talent that is presented daily in these pages, and I'd like to maximize on my good fortune by connecting with some fellow members up here in Canada.

So here we go; my name is Ken, and these days I build PT Boats and bead-rollers in the Aldershot area of Burlington, Ontario. My workshop is tiny, but I've managed to surprise myself with how much fun a guy can cram into a room that measures 13'x8'. I'm 44 years old, I'm a DSL technician with the local telephone company, I have a Myford ML7 lathe, and I think American Beer sucks!

So there ya go, I'm looking forward to hearing from you fellow Canadian Metalheads.

Cheers!

John Van Oostenbrugge from Lethbridge Alberta, have to breeze in and out from time to time at lunch hour, don't have a computer at home. They frown on this at work, but that's tough. I sent my registration liability release and money in Wednesday night, and it will probably take 2 weeks by mail to get to Randy. I can't find any recent info on whether I will be accepted to Metal Meet '04, but I plan to attend, if possible. I have lots more to say, but I don't have the time at lunch hour at work, to fully participate in this site. That will change in the near future, when I gain access to a computer full time. Presently working on a 1930 model A Ford pickup, stretched 4 inches in the middle of the doors. I'm kind of a novice, but I can tig weld, make patch panels, and do basic bodywork. Also have a '27 T roadster, full chassis and frame scratch built, about half done. Gotta go. jvo

Jeffrey Richard here from Moncton, New Brunswick. My grand father was a blacksmith and I've always been drawn to metalworking. I'm 33 and restoring a 74 Datsun 260z. Along with auto metalwork I hope to try my hand at armour making. Well if I ever get my house remodeling finished. :)

I'm making several sand bags this weekend from a leather jacket I aquired at the local second hand clothing store ($10). I also plan to cut up the new alignment punches I bought at Princess Auto ($6) to make some metal tuckers.

I've learned so much from this site in the past week and was so happy to find it.

My projects are a bend top E wheel and a beader. I was a manual and CNC machinist for a number of years. I don't have a lathe but I have a few good friends at the local community college. I plan to hit one up to make the wheels. :)

Thanks for creating this site and I look forward to sharing in your experience.

Jeff

Tim from Ottawa. Gearhead that's interested in metal shaping and panel repair.

How to get things across the border..... You open a US PO box in the nearest border town, and you have your deliveries made there. Then you drive down when you have nothin else to do for a few hours and pick it up. Pay the taxes ( or not  ) and your laughin. Avoid the temptation to buy the cheap beer.

Hi everyone, I'm from Sherbrooke in Quebec, i mostly do rustoration and like to build my own tools, i did pick up many idea from this great website.I will look foward to go at a metalmeet anywhere soon.Right now i work on a "55 chevy pickup and a '29 Ford tudor,I will post pics of my homemade tools soon. For the PO box in Us it's a good idea but many vendor won't ship by post, the best thing is to find the closer UPS depot from the border and have your item ship there (hold on pickup).

Hi guys, Mike from Markham Ontario (just north of Toronto).

I'm building a "Locost", a scratch built Lotus 7 inspired car. The metal shaping is simple but this site has been very helpful in figuring out how to make it happen.

Hi Ken, Kerry Neilson here, Surrey, BC. Glad to read your post, happy to see there is possible Metalmeet interest in Canada. Ive got 30+ years in metal trades, practiced at most disciplines, at the moment most of my interest surrounds toolbuilding for working with light metal. Ran into this site searching for info on powerhammers. Really like the sharing of knowledge aspect and looking forward to contributing more ...............Regards...........KNeilson

My thoughts exactly! I'm happy to see the interest from the Canadian membership in recent days, as I think it would be a great idea to get some networking going between us in order to share information and ideas. Finding out where we are located is a great start, and I'm looking forward to hearing from more of us from north of the border.

MetalMeet in Canada....I like that idea! Anybody got a shop?

Cheers!

I think its great we're all joining in here, but I don't feel the need to distinguish myself from our neighbors to the South. I feel there is very little difference between us, except we have a health care system, and pay high taxes. (I spent 18 days in the burn unit in intensive care in Foothills Hospital Calgary, 2 plastic surgeries, 7 months off work, and going to physiotherapy the whole time, and it never cost me one red cent out of my own pocket, other than my Alberta Health Care premiums off my paycheque.) I love American beer. Canadian beer gives me a headache, must be the way it is chemically aged. Its a well-known fact that most Canadians live with 100 miles of the U.S. border. I am flying to MM04, because it is about 1900 miles for me to drive there. Conversely, it is much further for me to drive to Toronto, let alone the East coast. Maybe someday I'll do it, when I get my roadster done, to give the flathead a good test. I'd love to get together with you guys down East, but if I lived where you guys do, with the offers that Wray Schelin gives out, I would be pestering him almost every weekend. I like the idea of a regional meet, it is only about a long day's drive for me to go to Seattle, or Vancouver BC, or Portland. It is only about 900 miles South to Denver. I just have to make the effort.
I do however, like the idea of exchanging ideas on materials, and machinery, etc. I really don't want to offend my fellow Canadians, but most importantly, I don't want to offend our friends to the South, that make this site possible.
MM04 is my goal for this year, but I am definitely interested in attending a regional meet anywhere out west, if its within driving distance of where I live. I guess that's why in the street rodding world, they have a Northwest, Southwest, Midwest, Southeast and also a Northeast National event every year. Just my two-bits worth. John, I hope you make it to MM04, look forward to meeting you. The exact point you were making in your post is what makes this site so valuable. No matter where you live in the world, as long as you have internet access you can share in the learning process on this site. No one has to be left out because of where they live.

Anywhere you can find a handful of intrested folks, you can have a regional meet.

MM03 was an inspiring thing for me last year. I walked from one group to another most of the week trying to absorb all that was happening. I know this year will be better, can't wait............john

Hi ,my name is Greg Friesen,I live about 30 mi. south of Winnipeg Manitoba and about 30 miles north of U.S. border.I have owned a bodyshop for about 20 years. In the last 10 or so years we have been doing mostly restoration and street rod work. This site has helped me with many different metal shaping problems and even though I don't post many mesages,I come and learn here every chance I get.Since I live in the centre of Canada, maybe you all want to have a metalmeet here?I have most of basic hand tools, lathe, bead roller, air powered P-hammer,and an almost complete E-wheel.If anyone is interested, checkout some of my projects. My latest personal ride is a 48 Chev extended cab pickup. http://community.webshots.com/user/gregfri

Hi Steve,

Welcome to MetalMeet. :D

Dutch Comstock and I have been talking about offering sheetmetal shaping lessons for quite a while and this winter it should happen at last. Dutch has a good size shop in Herkimer, NY that can easily accomodate 10-12 for lessons. Herkimer is in east central upstate NY right on the NY Thruway (rt.90).

Dutch has a full compliment of shaping tools including a Yoder power hammer, Pullmax, and English wheel, etc. . I would bring with me several other English wheels and other assorted tools.

We have yet to annouce dates, agenda,or fees. Please keep tuned .

We will gear lessons around what the students desire to learn and the tools that they have or intend to buy. With two fulltime professional metalshaper instructors there will be excellent one on one coverage and everyone will get to see the different ways of accomplishing the same task.

We will be raffling off at MetalMeet 04 lessons for one individual
( date to be annouced) as a fund raiser for the MetalMeet.com site.

Sorry, tickets will only be sold at MM04, if you know someone that plans to attend you can have them buy raffle tickets for you.

Hi Victor, welcome to Metalmeet! We often get teenagers on this site. I wish I had started when I was that young, but this kind of info was only available from master metalmen and those were scarce even then. We are lucky to have several on this site, and the information is free. If you can study this site you can recieve a great training, add a couple of Meets and you are on your way

Good Luck............john
